WHO IS ELIGIBLE? Any student with a disability ages 3 through 21 who has an IEP must be considered for eligibility for ESY services.
When you go to your child's IEP meeting and there is someone you do not know at the meeting just ask "Could you tell us how much time you have spent with my child?"
I see a huge growing trend where Central Office staff or the principal's are running IEP meetings instead of it being an IEP Team process. If they do not have special expertise on your child because they do not work with them nor have they gotten to know them - they can not make informed decisions about your child but instead are there to make DECISIONS for the district.
This is your child's IEP Team not the place for others to come in to save money for the district.
So, I explain before introductions "When we go around the room and introduce ourselves let's also say for the recording how long we have worked with SuperSTAR or how much time we have spent with SuperSTAR ."
A Hearing Officer needs to know who knows SuperSTAR and who does not so this will save you a little time if or when you have to file Due Process as it will already be in the record.
and Administrators if you want to SIT on a Team you MUST know the child's needs and just because you have a TITLE in a district does not mean you know my child.
(YES, there must be one LEA on the Team which is normally the Principal but there does not need to be four Admins from Central Office who know nothing about your child)

Lots of talk on the internet around this post and I want to be sure everyone fully understands the intention of this post.
ALL parents have the right to understand how well people making decisions about their children know them. If any school employee is not comfortable with answering that question - then maybe it is because the answer really is "not enough" which is the entire point!
If anyone sitting on my child's team has never seen or met him - how can they ever say they are making INDIVIDUALIZED decisions about him? They can not.
Would you take recommendations from a Doctor who has never met the patient?
This should be just common sense!

Thank you for visiting our website/facebook. We are Special Education Advocates and Consultants working to provide advocacy services for the child with physical, emotional, behavioral, developmental delays and learning disabilities. We assist families in obtaining the Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) their children are entitled to.
We work directly with parents and schools to secure the necessary services and education for those who qualify under IDEA and ADA.
We accompany the parent to the IEP meetings and help develop an appropriate educational program (IEP) that will allow for the child to be more successful.
The goal is for parents to learn the special education process and become more knowledgeable about the IEP process to guarantee that their child receives a free and appropriate education (FAPE).
Dr. Burnett, the founder of California Special Education Advocacy Group, holds a masters degree in Marriage and Family Therapy and a doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology, which gives her the knowledge and expertise in the interpretation of Psychoeducational evaluations in determining the child’s individual educational needs.
