When seeking mental health support, it’s important to know who does what. Here’s a breakdown:
🔹 Therapist – A broad term for professionals (e.g., counselors, social workers, psychologists) who provide therapy to help with emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges. They do not prescribe medication.
🔹 Psychiatrist/PMHNP –
• Psychiatrist: A medical doctor (M.D. or D.O.) who diagnoses mental health conditions and prescribes medication. Some also provide therapy, but many focus on medication management.
• Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP): An advanced practice nurse who specializes in mental health and can diagnose conditions, prescribe medication, and provide therapy in some cases.
🔹 Psychologist – Holds a Ph.D. or Psy.D. and specializes in therapy, psychological testing, and research. They cannot prescribe medication (except in a few states with special training).
The best choice depends on your needs—therapy, medication, or both! Often, these professionals work together to provide the best care. 💙
