December 13 is the Memorial of Saint Lucy. Born in 283, although St. Lucy's father left her and her mother great wealth, Lucy chose to give it to the poor. This greatly angered the man to whom she was betrothed. She then refused to make any sacrifice to pagan gods. The governor ordered her to be tortured and executed. Today, Lucy is the patron saint for people who are blind.

December 8 is the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception. When Mary was born, she was free from original sin. She is all-pure and all-holy. Mary most holy and mother of our Lord Jesus, pray for us!

Today is the Feast of St. Nicholas.

Having lost both of his parents at a young age, St. Nicholas became a bishop whose kindness to those in need was legendary. When he became aware of a man who could not afford to provide dowries for his three daughters, St. Nicholas would sneak into their house at night after everyone had fallen asleep. He would then leave bags of gold so that the girls could marry. To this day, children excitedly awaken on Christmas morning to see what "Saint Nick" has left for them! At Misericordia, we are indeed grateful to the Sisters of the Daughters of Our Lady of Mercy who have dedicated their lives to serving others.

Today is the Memorial of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Having lived in the 4th century, Catherine was known to be highly intelligent. Her arguments in defense of Christianity were so effective that many of the emperor's most loyal subjects converted, including his own wife! When an angel destroyed the device that was going to be used to torture Catherine, the emperor had her beheaded.
