Vance Fisher, Jr., of York, SC passed away peacefully on Monday, September 15, 2025, at the age of 80.
Born on January 27, 1945 in Durham, NC, Vance grew up with a deep sense of service and dedication. He graduated from Durham High School in 1963 and went on to earn his degree from NC State University in 1967. Shortly thereafter, he was commissioned in the U.S. Army as a Second Lieutenant.
Following flight school, Vance was deployed to Vietnam in October 1968 where he courageously flew more than 840 combat assault and support mission hours until October 1969. He later served at Fort Wolters, TX as Chief of the Warrant Officer Development Department and in the Republic of Korea as an Officer-in-Charge. He concluded his distinguished military career in 1973, having earned the respect of his fellow soldiers and leaving a legacy of service and leadership.
In civilian life, Vance built a long career of over 30 years as an insurance claims adjuster, including often traveling to assist communities recovering from natural disasters. He retired in 2008.
Retirement brought Vance deeper connections with the veteran community he so cherished. As a dedicated member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he was active in both East Hampton, CT and Rock Hill, SC. A Legacy Life Member, he held numerous leadership roles including Senior Vice-Commander, Quartermaster, Trustee, and Color Guard member. Within the VFW, he found not only camaraderie but also a sense of purpose and belonging that enriched his later years.
Above all, Vance was devoted to his family. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 45 years, Doris Fisher; his parents, Vance Sr. and Elizabeth Fisher; his brother, Marvin Fisher; his stepson, Jeffrey Hull; and his niece, Brooke Thompson.
He is lovingly remembered by his stepdaughter Laura Brown (Stephen) and stepson Robert Hull, Jr.; grandchildren Justin Hull (Kaitlyn), Erikka Hull, Jarrett Hull, Rebecca Brown, Sarah Brown (Geoffrey), Joshua Brown (Amy), and Jamie Brown (Meredith); great-grandchildren Tyler, Meghan, Zachery, Emily, Eloise, Henry, Samuel, Ethan, Lauren, Elizabeth, and Jaedan; great-great-grandchild Dakota; his nephew Gregory Fisher; and grandnieces and nephews Madi, Will Fisher, and Maycee Thompson. His life and legacy ripple across five generations, leaving a family bound together by love, strength, and gratitude for his example.
Vance will be remembered for his deep loyalty to family and country and the countless ways he served others.
