This is very compelling research providing evidence that music can change brain structure. These researchers paired music with learning through practice of a new task involving basic movement. They demonstrated through imaging studies that there was increased structural connectivity between the regions of the brain that process sound and control movement. The study showed, using MRI scans that the subjects in the treatment group (who received music paired with the motor task) showed a significant proliferation of connectivity between the white matter that connects the motor and auditory regions in the right side of the brain. These findings are very promising for those patients who are being treated for a condition involving motor impairment, such as strokes or certain brain injuries.
