Nana has been alive for a long time, and these days her body is often tired or hurting. In Paloma Angelina Lopez’s book “Popo the Xolo,” Nana begins the transition from life to death. Luckily, her dog Popo is right by her side as she remembers her life lived, the people she loved, and how she will be remembered when she is gone. This beautifully illustrated book was purchased from local Hanover book shop, Little Foxes books!

The Grief and Loss Lending Library at Olivia’s House is a sight to behold! Each shelf is filled with the most unique, age-appropriate, and up-to-date resources, and it is our honor to share them with the community!

In one of our favorite books, Kathy Miller’s Chippy Chipmunk: Friends in the Garden, Chippy learns to think of his loved ones who have died whenever he sees a heart. Imagine our delight (and slight confusion) in staff meeting this week, when Clinical Director Julia started snapping photos of her Olivia’s House coffee mug, only to share this perfectly formed bubble heart! Thank you for the reminder, Chippy, that our loved ones are always only a sip away

Who knows grieving teens better than a grieving teen! That’s what 14-year-old Jenny Lee Wheeler thought, when she wrote her self-help book “Weird is Normal When Teenagers Grieve.” Jenny normalizes the unique bereavement of teenagers and speaks directly to her peers right through the pages. This is a great resource for those teens who would benefit from journaling but might be intimidated by a blank page.

With a snowstorm on the horizon, the world may grow a little quieter. For some, that stillness can feel comforting; for others, especially those carrying grief, it can feel heavy. If this weekend brings a forced pause, we invite you to see it as a universal mental health day. A chance to slow down, honor what you’re feeling, and take care of yourself in whatever way feels most supportive. You don’t have to be productive to be worthy. Sometimes, simply resting is enough.

It was another spectacular night of gathering around the table for pizza, play, and camaraderie during Game Night at Olivia’s House! We had a full house of children who were ready to connect with each other, including both returning players and brand-new faces. It is the year of “The Game of Grief” at Olivia’s House, and we sure rolled it out in style. Can’t wait to see everyone next month!

We were recently invited to be a guest on friend of the mission Kasey King’s, podcast, “Bodacious Estate Conversations!” Clinical Director Julia joined Kasey to talk all things children’s grief: how to infuse direct and honest language with compassion, the importance of maintaining a spiritual relationship with the person who died, and finding unique ways to continue healing as time moves on. Thank you so much to Kasey for inviting us to be a part of this special venture!

On this third Monday in January, we are invited to pause and remember the great civil rights leader, Martin Luther King, Jr. Years ago, the Olivia’s House staff was visiting Atlanta, GA and had the coincidental pleasure of sharing a ride with a colleague and friend of MLK, Jr.’s daughter, Bernice King. Chance meetings like these are reminders that loss ties us together in the most human of ways, as do our stories of healing.

Exciting news! 🎉 Thanks to the incredible generosity of Yazoo Mills, Inc., our Hanover Cafe remodel is complete! Before the holiday break, wall art was installed which was the final step. In every home, the kitchen is where connection happens naturally, and Olivia’s House is no different. The Yazoo Mills Café is a place to pause, warm your hands around a cup of coffee, and share a simple treat while being surrounded by understanding and care. We can’t wait to host an official ribbon cutting and dedication of the fully transformed Yazoo Mills Café with our community soon. 🦁
