You read that right.

Per the American College of OB/GYN's 2019 VBAC guidelines, the risk of maternal death during a planned vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) is 0.0019%.

Expressed another way, that is a risk of 1 in 52,600.

Did you have any idea the risk was that low?

Whereas the risk of maternal death with an elective repeat cesarean after one cesarean is 0.0096% or 1 in 10,000.

Again, both really small numbers but the risk of maternal death is five times higher in a repeat cesarean.

This is why when pregnant people are threatened with "you could die if you plan a VBAC," it falls flat.

But it is often really successful in coercing someone into a repeat cesarean... as well as eroding patient autonomy and any trust when the birthing person learns the facts.

As a L&D nurse told us, "There is no real informed consent anymore."

This is just yet another example.

ETA: Some people asked in the comments about the risk of fetal death. We discuss that here: https://vbacfacts.com/2012/04/03/confusing-fact-only-6-of-uterine-ruptures-are-catastrophic/

Others have asked about vaginal birth after classical cesarean: https://vbacfacts.com/2021/08/10/vbac-after-classical-t-j-incision/

… or after two cesareans: https://vbacfacts.com/vba2c

My beautiful best friend just gave birth to her second, perfect daughter earlier this month. Can I just say, she totally rocked a precipitous pitocin augmentation without pain medication. During her postpartum visit, this is how she described how it felt. By “a lot” she means intense, and from what I gathered, her opinion is that it was worth every minute, because afterwards she was able to get up, walk to the bathroom and rinse off in the shower by herself! Talk about empowering!

**This is *not* to say you can’t feel empowered after an epidural birth! It is all about making the right, informed choices for yourself, and feeling amazing about them! I encourage you to learn your options and weigh the pros and cons before birthing time, so you can decide what’s best for you! Your doula can help you do that 😉

It’s been a full year since I posted here! I have been terrible with my business social media and it’s a personal goal to get better and more consistent at it. If this is the time to try to do that, I’m not sure 🙈 2020 was a crazy, frustrating, difficult, (etc, etc) year for so many, and while our family had our struggles (can we say virtual school ugh!) we have also had a bit of a happy surprise as well! Baby Brother Kling # 4 is due in early May 💙 our youngest “baby” will be 7 shortly after he is born so this journey will be a whole lot different for our family!

Has anyone else had a large age gap between children? I’m especially curious if you’ve had a few close together and then a large age gap!

Saw this in a group and had to share it! Love The Office. Can anyone else hear Dwight saying this?

VERNIX CASEOSA....
Vernix is a thick creamy waxy substance that covers the body of the newborn (reminds me of cocoa butter!). It's seen more in babies born a couple of weeks prior to the 'due date' as it reduces towards the end of pregnancy. It is made up of water, fats and proteins.

The vernix protects and nourishes the baby's soft skin, has antimicrobial properties and acts as a barrier in the uterus to stop the amniotic fluid macerating the skin in the womb. Can you imagine how your skin would look after 9 months in the bath!
Vernix is thought to help with an easier transition through the birth canal and it thought to aid temperature regulation at birth.
When a baby is born, the newborn skin undergoes a number of changes and adaptions to the outside world in terms of PH and hydration. Vernix helps to regulate these changes so its worthwhile not bathing baby to soon. Think of vernix as a moisturiser and rub it in rather than wipe it off!
It is recommended by WHO to wait at least 24 hours before bathing a newborn (I would even say 2/3 days) as it has its benefits including reduced risk of infection, better temperature regulation, more skin to skin time leading to better breastfeeding outcomes and blood sugar regulation. If your baby has a little dried blood in their hair and it bothers you, you can always wipe the hair gently with a cloth and warm water.

Over the last 117 months, I have spent 57 months lactating. That’s just shy of half of the last decade 🐄 Breastfeeding is something that people have so much to say about and somehow it’s become this touchy subject. Moms are shamed for not doing it long enough or at all, they’re shamed for doing it in public, shamed for doing it without a cover. Over the last 10 years I have learned a LOT about breastfeeding, and have had to change how I look at it just because I’ve learned so much! I’ve learned that just because it’s natural and I’ve had a pretty stinking easy time of it, doesn’t mean its easy for every mom and every baby. Just because it’s easy for me or you doesn’t mean it’s still not hard, and in some cases impossible! It’s time consuming, exhausting, sometimes painful, emotional, it screws up your s*x drive, it doesn’t always help you lose weight like they say... If you’ve breastfed or pumped for a day, or for 5 years, you DESERVE to celebrate!!
