Yoga for Life Barkan Method Hot Yoga 1638 East Market Street, 2nd Floor York, PA The Barkan Method of Hot Yoga is a style of Hatha Yoga that originated from a lineage in Calcutta, India, starting with Paramahansa Yogananda. his brother and student Bishnu Ghosh, Ghosh’s student Bikram Choudhury, and Bikram’s student Jimmy Barkan. Jimmy worked as an instructor and trainer for Bikram for over 20 years. While the Barkan Method has it roots in Bikram Yoga, it differs in that it provides a greater variety of poses, and it incorporates vinyasa flow, with an emphasis on upper body work and poses to strengthen the core. The series of twenty-six to thirty postures done in a heated room with elevated humidity is designed to scientifically warm and stretch the muscles, ligaments and tendons, in the order in which they should be stretched for optimum benefit. The heat makes the exercise aerobic (without impact on the joints), allows you to stretch deeper while avoiding injury, and detoxifies the body. The result is vastly improved balance, flexibility, strength, mental clarity and focus. Whether you are an advanced yoga student, or have never tried yoga, this class is for you. Bring your own mat, towel and plenty of water. Larry Heim, ERYT 200 RYT 500 is certified in The Barkan Method of Hot Yoga, Levels I, II and III. Yoga for Life Never too old, never too young, never too ill Our studio is conveniently located at the southwest corner of the intersection of East Market and Belmont Streets, on the second floor above the Soap & Suds Laundromat. The entrance is through the front glass doors on the Belmont Street side. Teaching Yoga for the Instructor’s at Yoga for Life is part of their Karma Yoga practice, namely the practice of selfless service. They receive no compensation for their services at the studio, other than the joy of spreading the message of yoga to others. It was only possible to open Yoga for Life through the incredible generosity of Joe and Ann Silbaugh, owners of the property. They were impressed with our mission, and offered the space to us free of charge so that we could continue and expand our program. For the past nine years we have been teaching in health clubs, medical facilities and schools. This opportunity finally gives us a home of our own. The charge for classes at Yoga for Life is only $30 per calendar month $15 per month for four classes or Partner Yoga, or the drop in rate of $5.00 per class. The monthly rate is less than the cost of two classes at most other studios. The class fees go entirely to covering the utilities and costs of the studio. Checks should be payable to Joe Silbaugh. The current class schedule is Mon., Wed. and Thurs., from 6:15 until 7:30 am, Tues. and Fri from 6:15 to 7:00 am, Saturday from 8:00 to 9:30 am, and Partner Yoga Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00. Students should arrive a minimum of 5 minutes before class as the entrance door will be locked at that time. Parking is available in the Soap & Suds parking lot on Belmont Street, the parking lot directly across the street from the York Little Theatre, or in the York Little Theatre parking lot on the opposite side of the street. For the Saturday class please do not use the Soap & Suds parking lot as this is a busy time for them. For additional information call 717-755-4224 or email lc@khlaw.us.
