There is no concussion-proof helmet; however, a sport or activity-specific helmet can help protect your athlete from a serious brain or head injury!

While your child should AVOID hits to the head, even with a helmet on, it is important that when serious collisions or impacts occur, your athlete is wearing a properly fitted, age-appropriate, certified sport or activity helmet. 🪖

You wouldn’t think to bring a baby home from the hospital without a car seat. Protecting your children from the potential risk of TV and furniture tip-overs is another important part of keeping them safe!

Remember to move heavy items to low shelves or drawers to prevent tipping and remove tempting objects that a child can see but cannot reach, like electronics or other items from on top of furniture you don’t want children to climb on.

Before they can walk, our little ones learn to crawl on all fours. When they get older, they should learn that getting low and crawling to an exit is the best way to navigate their home in the event of a fire to avoid smoke. Fire safety doesn’t have to feel scary! Turning learning into a game can help kids remember what to do in an emergency. As you play and practice together, remember to:

🚪 Create and practice a home fire escape plan, with two ways out of every room

🏠 Choose a safe meeting spot outside your home

🔥 If there’s smoke, get low and crawl to an exit

🚒 Leave immediately and call 911 once you’re safely outside

When families practice together, safety becomes second nature! To learn more: https://www.safekids.org/tip/fire-safety-tips

With freezing weather sweeping across the country, we know parents may worry about keeping their babies warm. ❄️ It's important to remember that soft bedding, like cozy blankets, can block a baby’s airway and create an unsafe sleep environment. Instead, keep your little one warm with a sleep sack—it’s a safe and cozy alternative!

As fun as sledding can be, it can also be just as dangerous. 🛷

Follow these tips from Healthy Children to ensure your child’s safety this sledding season:

• Keep sledders away from motor vehicles, obstructions, and crowded areas.
• Ensure your children are supervised while sledding.
• Keep young children separated from older children.
• Teach your child to sled feet first or sitting up, instead of lying down head-first, to help prevent head injuries.
• Use steerable sleds, not snow disks or inner tubes.

Teens with a formal driving or passenger agreement are less likely to risks behind the wheel or as a passenger.
