Spider veins and varicose veins may look similar, but they’re not the same.

Spider veins are small, thread-like, and often red or blue.
Varicose veins are larger, twisted, and may cause aching or heaviness.

Both are treatable, and both can signal underlying vein disease.
Understanding the difference is the first step in feeling better.

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost, the families forever changed, and the heroes who showed extraordinary courage on September 11, 2001.

As we honor their memory, we also reflect on the resilience, unity, and compassion that carried us forward. May we continue to stand together in strength and hope.

World Heart Day is at the end of this month, the perfect reminder that your heart and veins work together every single day.

Your veins are like a return delivery service for your blood, and your heart is waiting for every package. If that system slows down, so does your health. When vein valves weaken, blood can pool in your legs, causing swelling, heaviness, or circulation issues that put added strain on your heart.

The good news is that our minimally invasive treatments can restore proper blood flow, protect your vascular health, and support your heart.

Book a vein checkup this month and keep your heart smiling.

World Heart Day is coming up on September 29, the perfect reminder that your veins and heart work in tandem. 🩺

Your heart pumps blood to the far reaches of your body through arteries. Your veins return blood to your heart.

Healthy circulation depends on your heart, arteries, and veins working together. A breakdown in the system can lead to tired, heavy legs, swelling, or pain.

Let’s get your circulation in check before World Heart Day.

Ever notice a tender, red, or rope-like vein just under your skin?

It might be more than just irritation; it could be superficial thrombophlebitis, a mild but important sign that inflammation or a small clot has formed in a surface vein.

While it’s often manageable, leaving it untreated can lead to more serious complications, like deep vein clots or worsening swelling.

Dr. Schmetterer offers expert evaluation and minimally invasive care to treat the cause, not just the symptoms.

Surgical Excellence. Trusted Care.

It was all timing.

In 1969, I was 13 years old. Dr. Michael DeBakey at the Baylor College of Medicine in Texas had developed the first artificial heart, which was successfully implanted into a human patient. Around this time, my grandfather traveled to Texas to undergo a vascular bypass operation by this ground breaking physician, Dr. DeBakey. For me, these events were amazing and captivating, and the surgeon was larger than life. I was fascinated that a world famous surgeon had operated on my grandfather. At that time, in 7th grade science class, we were studying the cardiovascular system. Our teacher brought to class a cow’s heart and lungs. She opened the heart, revealing the chambers, valves and the great vessels. She blew air into the trachea (windpipe) inflating the lungs. It was beautiful, science, and powerful. It was a matter of timing. At that moment I knew my future. Nothing mattered more to me than becoming a surgeon trained to repair cardiovascular disease for those in need. And now, nothing matters more to me than helping you.

For over 26 years, I have been fortunate to call the Mahoning Valley, “Home,” and bring my skills to help those in need. Throughout my studies at Duke University and Oxford, as well at medical school at the University of Illinois in Chicago through completion of my training at University of Southern California, I was determined to be the most compassionate and knowledgable cardiovascular disease physician. I bring this same determination to every encounter with my patients, both at my office and the hospitals of Salem Regional Medical Center, Trumbull Regional Medical Center and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, where I am grateful to practice.

My calling to be a thoracic and vascular surgeon was a discovery I made at an early age. I made another amazing discover in 1994 where I found my wife, Dr. Susan Woods, and raised our two amazing sons here in Youngstown. Timing is everything, and I hope you will take the time to discover the compassionate care and medical expertise our team can offer you here in the Mahoning Valley.
