As we light the first candle of Hanukkah this year, we feel an overwhelming creep of darkness in our celebration. The miracle of Hanukkah teaches us that light will always triumph over darkness. Our hearts are with our friends in Australia, Brown University, and anyone who is facing unimaginable loss, we must remember that even in our darkest hours, we have the power to shine extraordinary light—As One.

We refuse to let the darkness of hate extinguish the flame of Jewish life. Tonight, we will proudly light the first candle during our Hanukkah celebrations. We will use every tool at our disposal to make sure our communities are safe and that our lights burn all the brighter.

Youngstown Area Jewish Federation statement on shooting in Australia

The Youngstown Area Jewish Federation is horrified by the antisemitic terrorist shooting in Australia. This was a deliberate terrorist act targeting the Jewish community in Sydney as they celebrated the first night of Hanukkah, and must be loudly and clearly called out as antisemitism. Terrorist attacks such as this clearly show what happens when Jew hatred is normalized.

The security of the Jewish community and anyone who visits our campus is always a top priority for the Federation. We are on high alert during celebrations and programs, and continuously work with our law enforcement partners. Attacks such as this also show the need for continued security funding, and we urge leaders to approve appropriate funding.

We mourn those killed in this horrific shooting, send our prayers to their families, and wish a speedy and full recovery to the injured.

Our community will never retreat in the face of hatred, and will never refrain from carrying on our Jewish traditions. Tonight, we will proudly light the first candle during our Hanukkah celebrations. We will use every tool at our disposal to make sure our communities are safe and that our lights burn all the brighter.

Mark Huberman, Youngstown Area Jewish Federation Board President
Nancy Burnett, Jewish Community Relations Council Advisory Board Chair
Lisa Long, Youngstown Area Jewish Federation CEO
Bonnie Deutsch Burdman, Youngstown Area Jewish Federation executive director, community relations/government affairs

Your art can help tell a story of resilience, remembrance, and community. Submit your proposal for our new mural project!

Are you a Mahoning and Shenango Valley-based artist who is 18 or older and looking to be a part of a meaningful project? You’re in luck! We are currently in the process of renovating our Schwartz Holocaust and Antisemitism Resource Center, and part of our renovations include a mural that will serve as a remembrance to the 6 million who were killed and to honor the Survivors who came to Youngstown after the war. If this sounds like something you would be interested in, please press the link down below to learn more about the process and requirements! Please note that all proposals must be submitted electronically by January 31, 2026 at 5:00 p.m.
