Yesterday the Paisley House family celebrated a wonderful lady after she spent the day with her family! Though she was full, there’s always room for cake! Happy Birthday Pat! ❤️🎂

As our kitchen rennovation along with the "shower" we held to celebrate it with our residents is fresh in our minds, and our wonderful donors of kitchen wares are fresh in our hearts, we share this piece of Paisley House history from back when our assisted living home was called "the Home for Aged Women". We now have men living in our home as well. This gift acknowledgement hangs framed on our wall in the hall outside our dining room.

We had to share this post because Youngstown History is a huge part of Paisley House, while Paisley House is huge part of Youngstown History. This was a profound moment in all of baseball history, and George Shuba, a Youngstown native, made this bold move that was controversial at that time. That's why this statue was erected here in Youngstown. But if you're from Youngstown, it isn't surprising that the move was made by a Youngstowner.

Most people walk right past this statue in Youngstown… and have no idea what it represents.

This is “A Handshake for the Century.”

It captures the moment in 1946 when Jackie Robinson hit a home run for the Montreal Royals and crossed home plate.

Waiting for him was teammate George “Shotgun” Shuba, who reached out and shook Robinson’s hand.

It might not seem like much today…
but at that time, during segregation in America, that handshake meant something.

Just one year later Robinson would break the color barrier in Major League Baseball with the Brooklyn Dodgers.

And today, Youngstown honors that moment along the riverfront.

The real question is…

How many people in the Mahoning Valley even know this statue is here?
