NORMAL PHYSIOLOGICAL BIRTH ✨

"What exactly do I mean by normal physiological birth? 🤔

I am talking about a birth that is initiated by the hormonal interplay stimulated by the baby’s readiness to be born and the mother’s readiness to release the baby.

This is a birth where the labour is driven by surging birth hormones, hormones that drive the intensifying contractions—longer, stronger, closer-together contractions that open your body. Hormones that stimulate ‘bearing down’ urges to bring your baby onto your perineum, setting off a further surge of hormones that peak with an ‘oxytocin high’ at the moments of birth—a multi-tasking ‘love bombing’ that awakens your bonding behaviours, attunes your senses towards your exquisite new baby, and stimulates breastfeeding. Hormones that, at the same time, initiate the passing of the placenta and the contracting of the uterus to mark the completion of the birth.

Overall in Australia, according to the most recently released figures (Australia’s Mothers and Babies Report), we have spontaneous onset of labour rate of 46%, an induction rate of around 33%, and a caesarean rate over 35% (with some hospitals above 70%).
Troubling as these statistics might seem, the figures are even more confronting on closer look.
In addition to the high caesarean and induction rates, we have a vacuum extraction rate of 11%; forceps rate of 8%; augmentation rate (speeding up the labour with syntocinon/pitocin) of 16% and overall pain-relief rate of 78%. Then we have a 23% episiotomy rate.
Added to all these figures, managed third stage (the use of synthetic hormones to deliver the placenta) is practically standard across the board.

🔥 In childbirth, there comes a time when the positions are no longer comfortable.
The woman is feeling and positioning herself in the best way. The body is talking!

I love images like this because I think it's good to remember birth can happen literally ANYWHERE!

We dont need to be in a medical setting for birth to be safe in fact the opposite is shown to be true from the evidence.

Let's expand our idea of where we can give birth.

When the immediate postpartum is undisturbed, the first language spoken is not words. There’s just touch and the quiet symphony of skin against skin.

A baby pressed to the chest, breathing in the familiar scent of home they have always known.

The warmth of their parents’ embrace guides them gently into the world, teaching safety, trust, and love without a single instruction.

Touch, smell, closeness…they are not luxuries.
They are the ancient threads that weave
bonding, regulation, and belonging.

In these first moments, before the world intrudes,
