The Arc Nassau supports responsible development and growth. We want to preserve resources that serve our community. We know growth is inevitable and change is necessary; however, we ask for the opportunity to address these concerns head on and work towards a resolution that supports responsible growth and protects necessary resources.
Tonight is the County Commissioner’s meeting at 96135 Nassau Place (James S. Page Governmental Complex) in Yulee if you’d like to make your voice heard in person.
I’ve had a few conversations leading up to this meeting with the Planning Board and Rayonier’s project engineer. The bottom line is they’d like to know if they got the colors right on the map- are they rezoning appropriately? I hope our voices are heard that they did not, and this is not the plan that we would like to see them send forward to the state for approval.
A few things that I’ve heard along the way:
-They cannot change our own personal property zoning, so we will remain open rural. (Per the planning board). But the Rayonier representative continued to tell me we would become T 2.5. I’m not a lawyer, but I feel like I need one to tell me what is truly happening and what can happen. It definitely seems like a fuzzy issue for a lay person to understand.
-Both the Planning Board and the Rayonier representative have said there is no actual site plan in the works for this area. This was meant to be reassuring that development is not imminent, however the rezoning is. Once it’s rezoned, there is little we can do once there is a site plan because they can pack 3-5 houses per acre as laid out in the zoning ordinances.
-We’ve been assured that Rayonier wants to be a good neighbor. We’re hoping that this is true and they will amend the current plan to include more open rural space around us before submitting to the state and approving.
It’s not too late to email your commissioners if you cannot make the meeting tonight.
If you can do nothing else (and even if you can and have!), please pray for clarity and wisdom for those making the final decisions. Pray that those who speak are able to do so with strength and peace, and pray that God continues to write the story of Paramount to be a blessing in our community.
