October is Depression Awareness Month.

"Thanks to sensationalized media depictions of mental illness and stigma surrounding mental health conditions, people tend to have a limited view of what depression actually looks like.

When you think of a “depressed person,” perhaps you envision an image from a movie or medication commercial: Someone lying alone in a dark room, crying into a box of tissues, overcome with feelings of hopelessness.

This picture is not necessarily inaccurate; it is simply incomplete. There are many more manifestations of depression — symptoms that aren’t necessarily visible or immediately obvious.

Knowing the seldom discussed symptoms of depression is a valuable skill; being able to recognize the less obvious signs may help you or a loved one identify and seek treatment for depression, if needed. Additionally, knowing and fully understanding these symptoms allows us to be more compassionate and helpful to those who are living with mental health conditions."

October is National Bullying Prevention Month.

Many people are bullied, especially those in their teenage years. But many times, people are not sure how to speak up or speak out against bullying.

There are three different individuals in a bullying situation: the victim, the bully, and the bystanders. Each of these individuals is affected differently by bullying.

At Starting Point Behavioral Healthcare, we offer a variety of programs and treatment services for adults and youth aged 17 and younger who are facing mental health and substance use disorders. Our program's primary goal is to help clients achieve stability by promoting health and wellness. Get started today at www.spbh.org/how-to-get-support.

Our CEO, Laureen Pagel, attended the Florida Behavioral Health Association's Behavioral Health Day, focusing on Law Enforcement Partnerships in Tallahassee this week.

On Wednesday, leaders from Florida’s behavioral health community joined with state leaders and law enforcement professionals to reaffirm a critical message that collaboration saves lives.

At a time when mental health and substance use challenges continue to impact communities across Florida, strong partnerships between behavioral health providers and public safety professionals are more important than ever.

The collaboration between law enforcement and behavioral health agencies has grown significantly in recent years. From co-responder models, where clinicians accompany officers on mental health calls, to Florida’s 24/7 Mobile Response Teams, these partnerships help to divert individuals from custody to care, de-escalate crises, and connect people to life-saving treatment and support.
