Thanksgiving 2019: Where did the time go? It was just August not too long ago but here it is, all are now shopping and preparing for the one of the biggest and most celebrated holiday. All the grocery store and shopping centers are now filled and decorated of Christmas ornaments and the yellows, oranges and fall colors are now hardly visible on the the shelves.
Here’s the grocery, produce and freezer sections were crowded with people, families picking the right size of turkey to brine, to dry rub or to marinate. Getting ready to decide whether to roast or to fry. What and which potatoes to buy, to mashed, to bake or to scalloped. Decisions need to be made, which pie do we want to serve this year? Do we go for the traditional apple pie or the ever favorite pumpkin pie, or so much so the sweet, nutty and gooey pecan pie. Nevertheless, every year, we find ourselves preparing for one of the most important family meal and gathering since we’ve known and celebrated Thanksgiving!
We will partake, we will eat and we will be with our family and friends, gathering together for the day. Some of them, we’ve only seen, hugged and kissed since last Thanksgiving. Some of us, we would take a moment to remember and reminisce the loved ones that departed and no longer physically here but still very much in our hearts and our minds.
For someone like me that all my career life involved food, cooking and nutrition, this time of the year is perfect time to contemplate the nature of food, how we eat and why we eat. The blessings and the delights that it brings to our lives and to our family gathering. Food is not just “to eat”, it is in the center of each special gathering, it is a big part of each culture. It bring forth tradition and happiness. It trigger certain emotions. It’s aroma brings back memories. Its taste and textures reminds us of our childhood, our parents, our grandparents. Recipes past on from generations to generations and each time that it was prepared and served...we remember our mothers, our fathers, our grandparents and great grandparents.
