If you’ve spent any time driving Highway 95, you probably know the spot—even if you never pulled over. Loren Pratt’s Little Chapel sat out there quietly, asking nothing of you except a glance, maybe a moment. And now it’s gone.

On July 3, 2021, I finally did what I’d passed by countless times before. I pulled off the highway and walked up to it with my camera. Up close, it felt smaller than it did from the road, but heavier somehow. The words Pause • Rest • Worship weren’t instructions as much as an invitation. Built in 1995 by Loren Pratt as a memorial to his late first wife, the chapel carried grief, love, and persistence in its bones.

It hadn’t had an easy life. A freak microburst storm destroyed it in 2011, the kind of desert violence that arrives fast and leaves nothing but wreckage. But people cared. Donations poured in. It was rebuilt—stronger, with stained glass catching the desert light—and reopened in time for Easter 2012. That alone said something about how deeply it had settled into the collective memory of travelers and locals alike.

This week, its chapter along Highway 95 ended. The chapel sat on leased land, and when the lease expired, it was removed. No ceremony. No final sermon. Just absence. I don’t know if it will rise again somewhere else or if this is the end of its physical form.

But places like that don’t really disappear. They linger in photographs, in stories, in the brief moments when strangers pulled over, shut off their engines, and stood still in the desert. For something so small, it asked us to slow down—and for a while, it succeeded.
