Beat the Summer & Fall Heat!

Uni Care's Home Health providers are mindful of heat-related illnesses with our patients, especially due to many of our patients having chronic conditions such as COPD, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, and dementia.

Heat-related illnesses can range from heat exhaustion and heat cramps to heatstroke. Staying hydrated, seeking cool environments, and avoiding strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day are key.

■ Unicare partnered with Banner Health and Haven of Sandpointe for a Socks for Seniors Drive at Unicare in Yuma to help those residing in nursing homes and assisted living homes as well as our homeless seniors. Employees who took part are: Unicare's Community Liaison Ramses Garcia, Banner Health's Mable Ward, Christopher Murphy and Yolanda, and Haven of Sanpointe's Santana. Zhneal Curtis was graciously donating socks for our seniors!

■ Hospice Community Liaison, Laura Arellano, took part in Haven Health Sandpointe's Halloween Carnival in October. Patients and staff alike enjoyed hamburgers, cotton candy and popcorn while they learned how Uni Care Hospice can partner with their team to provide symptom management and comfort for their patients.

■ Fall prevention is key to retaining independence and wellness. Unicare's Nora Quintero, Community Liaison, was privileged to have joined Ativo Senior Living, WACOG and the Yuma Fall Coalition to bring attention to this important topic at an Educational Health Fair in Yuma.
