Most people think the hard part is figuring out what to do — but the real gap is between knowing what to do and actually doing it.

I'm going to tell you some things you already know. You should stop eating junk food; you should take care of yourself physically; find someone to talk to; don't run with scissors. But you, like me, know those things already. Does anyone argue that exercise is good for you? (Yes, I know, some fanatics will argue anything.)

So you already know this stuff. But like Tony Robbins put it: "Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Wishing is not enough; we must do." And that gap — that "I know" compared to "I am doing" — is where we find regret. And neither I nor anyone else can cross that gap for you.

What do you know you need to do...but aren't doing?

I'm hanging out in Chicago, Illinois waiting for an improv intensive to start, and now I'm reminded that life is like an improv show.

Doesn't matter how much you prepare—sometimes it just doesn't go as well as you'd like it to. Those individual moments, whether you're attending a class or going to a coffee shop or going on a first date or a fifth date—sometimes they just don't go as well as you'd hope.

And that's okay. We have millions upon millions of moments in life. Don't get stuck on one bad moment because you've got millions more coming.

Recently I had a therapy session where things seem to come down to: I have a problem with control. That is, I like to be in control. And that's not surprising anyone who knows me.

But the interesting part was when I really looked at it...Things like my to-do list, right? I'm always managing my to-do list. I was trying to move my to-do list into a new wrapper or to work in a different way. Websites are the same thing. I'm polishing the website, trying to edit it instead of actually posting things. Whether it's posting a new post to the website or getting a to-do actually done, I'm always leaning into trying to make the system work.

Spoiler: It's not a system issue.

I think sometimes it just comes back to just wanting to control things. It's not a matter of trying to avoid getting things done. It's a matter of trying to build a perfect productivity system, which actually.... is a way to avoid getting things done.

Sometimes I beat up on myself a little bit because I'm not doing everything I wanna do.
Sometimes they say comparison is the theft of joy.
But I'm comparing myself to the people that I surround myself with, which are normally fit people and wise people and people that wanna have a long, joyful life. And that's not so bad to compare yourself against people like that. If that's your goal is to also say, "Hey, I wanna do those things too," right? It's valuable to recognize that.

As I'm on my way to Chicago to do improv in Chicago, well…you can't compare yourself to the people that have been working together for eight years and have these wonderful improv groups.

But also, you don't wanna let yourself off the hook doing the best you can.
