🏓🔥 Pickleball Alert: Surprising Injury Trends! 🔥🏓

Did you know? Along with pickleball mania comes a rise in some unexpected injuries, especially among older enthusiasts! 📈🦵

🔍 Study Spotlight:

As the sport gains traction across all ages, we took a closer look at pickleball-related Achilles tendon injuries. Here's what we found:

🏆 Highlights:
- 🩹 Of 2,684 Achilles injuries since 2013, 43 were caused by pickleball—rising steadily since 2016 (except for a COVID-19 dip in 2020).
- 👵 Pickleball players were notably older when injured (average age 64.5) compared to others (average age 48.6).
- ⚖️ Sporting a lower BMI (26.6) didn't exempt them—still more likely to end up in surgery (67.4% compared to 45.4%).

🚨 The Takeaway:

Pickleball’s popularity boom brings more than just fun rallies; it also poses new risks, especially for older players. It's time to prioritize safety and keep those Achilles tendons in top shape!

🦵 Tips to Keep You on the Court: 1️⃣ Always warm up before your game. 2️⃣ Choose supportive footwear. 3️⃣ Add strength and flexibility exercises to your routine. 4️⃣ Listen to your body—don’t push through pain!

A pilon fracture is a type of break that occurs at the bottom of the tibia (shinbone) and involves the weight-bearing surface of the ankle joint. With this type of injury, the other bone in the lower leg, the fibula, is frequently broken as well. A pilon fracture typically occurs as the result of a high-energy event, such as a car collision or fall from a height however this gentleman sustained from a low-energy fall. Pilon fractures are often severe injuries that can permanently affect the ankle joint. This was a challenging fracture as I did not see this patient until almost 4 weeks after the injury. He did not want a primary fusion so we opted to proceed with ORIF and luckily were able to get him back to anatomic alignment. Happy healing!

My Story

Dr. Kyle Lindow is a board certified Podiatrist (Doctor of Podiatric Medicine) with office locations in both Baton Rouge and Zachary, Louisiana.

During his time at Hunt, he also served as Chief Resident of the program.

Dr. Lindow completed his Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences at LSU and attended medical school at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland, graduating in the top of his class.
