I just saw this news in my feed, and I'm shocked and saddened - this is why.
Mandisa's music and stories ministered to me. Here are two of them.
Last week I was telling my daughter that when Mandisa confronted Simon Cowell on American Idol, it is still one of the most amazing moments I have seen on television.
He had fat-shamed her on a previous episode. This resonated with me for being fat-shamed as a child and teen.
Then she gently and lovingly confronted him, saying his words had hurt her. Yet she said "I forgive you," and it looked as if they reconciled.
It was a beautiful demonstration of forgiveness in action, and I've never forgotten it.
I bought her CD after she finished on American Idol. I listened to it in my van when I drove to stressful work meetings on Tuesdays with hostile, manipulative, mean-spirited people. Her soprano voice rising high with "Nothin's gonna steal my joy!" kept me focused on what seemed impossible - joy in the middle of my trials.
That memory surfaced several times in the past two years when I have gone through the worst suffering of my life. Her beautiful voice echoed in my mind and reminded me of that truth again.
I'm sorry that she's not here to continue making music. But I know it will be a joyful reunion in heaven someday when I tell her what her example and music meant to me.
