🌊 Avoid swimming alone, supervise children and pay attention to flag conditions when swimming in Lake Michigan.

“What we see probably the most of is orthopedic injuries, injuries to arms and legs; just basic lacerations and things like; some of the more things like drowning; injuries from trampolines and bikes that certainly can be a little more severe,” Dr. Whitney Minnock, the pediatric chief of emergency, said.

Our CATCH team recently made up some baskets filled with energy bite ingredients to raffle off at a local school event.

Spring is busy! Energy bites are a great snack filled with whole grains, fiber, and protein. They are easy to pack up and bring along to school, work, sporting events and more.

Get your kids in the kitchen and try some of the variations to make your own unique combination! All you need to do is mix together the ingredients in a bowl and form into bite-sized balls.

Ingredients:
1 3/4 cup oats
1/2 cup peanut butter
1/3 cup honey or maple syrup
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup chocolate chips
1 tbsp. chia seeds (optional)

Other mix-in options:
- Nuts
- Dried fruit
- Cocoa powder
- Coconut

"I was very confident that I had installed my newborn infant carrier correctly, as we had used the same one for our first child. Katelyn stopped by our room before we were discharged and offered to take a look at it.

I was glad she did; it turned out that I didn’t remember how to install the base for the carrier correctly! She gave me a refresher and made sure I could do it again on my own. The whole process took 5 minutes and could potentially save my child’s life if we are ever in a car accident. Thanks, Katelyn!" - Jonathon, patient.

Katelyn Jansheski and Melissa Wilder, certified child passenger safety technicians in Zeeland, are part of the Injury Prevention Program. They educate and support families with:

Expectant parents are invited to join this free group class to learn proper car seat installation, keeping your infant safely secured.

This class will answer the "how to" questions such as how to properly install the seat in the car, how buckles and straps work, how to properly secure your infant in the seat and much more.

Ryan Olson is a long-distance runner who has a track record of ambitious racing feats, but experienced recurring pain that sidelined him from his goals.

In September 2024, Ryan underwent a discectomy and laminectomy with Corewell Health spine surgeon Dr. Stephen Wanner, to address back pain and discomfort that had plagued him on and off for years.

“Dr. Wanner had high confidence in what the surgery could achieve,” Ryan said. “He was phenomenal. He was a good fit for me - he knew my ambitions and goals.”

Surgical recovery time was about 12 weeks, and Ryan was back to running around January, starting out slowly with a mile or two.

Ryan is focusing on rebuilding strength and stamina for the 2025 Amway River Bank Run on May 10, aiming for a “triple crown” by running all three components - the 5K, 10K and 25K.
