For the last two days our Travel with Purpose team has been split into two groups, with one team going on a 1 day safari while the other group prepped and began a second round of VBS. The safari team loved seeing the beautiful landscape of Kenya and all its wildlife and we are sharing it with you here.

The second team enjoyed being with the Pangani Center's 3rd graders during VBS and then about eighty 8th graders as they worked on a group art project. Pictures are below--check back tomorrow to see the final results!

A bit of a quieter day today. Church this morning at Pangani and then off to the home of our team member and native Kenyan, Alice Muriki. She and her sons hosted a lovely meal in their home, complete with roasted goat and a traditional cake.

With the former Prime Minister lying in state in the city today, we were unable to go to the learning center, so instead we'd love to share some images of local color, food and flowers. Enjoy this snapshot of the Kenyan culture we are experiencing.

GSC Travel with Purpose Trip - Day 5
Our team had a great first day of VBS in the morning, with seven groups of fourth graders rotating through the singing, Bible lesson, craft and game stations.
Although our day at the Pangani Center was cut unexpectantly short due to the death of the former Kenyan Prime Minister, Raila Odinga, we used the free time as an opportunity to prepare for tomorrow's VBS and also get some much needed rest. We are thankful for the care given to us by the amazing staff at MOHI.

GSC Travel with Purpose Trip - Day 4

Today we had the privilege of meeting with the two children that the Frederick Living Chapel sponsors through Mission of Hope International. Nehemiah and Ann are both in PP1, which is the introductory kindergarten class. We presented gifts to them as well as new shoes and a bag of food which benefits the family as well.

Nehemiah is all boy--very wiggly with a contagious smile and sweet spirit. Ann is quiet but enjoys drawing and is also a sweet girl. We enjoyed getting to know them a bit and share love from the Frederick Living residents.

GSC Travel with Purpose Trip - Day 3
Today we had our orientation at the Mission of Hope International (MOHI) Pangani Center. Some of the children sang and danced to welcome us. We learned about the history of this wonderful organization, its mission pillars, and plans for the future.
Small groups of us were then able to take walking tours of a small portion of the Mathare Valley, escorted by social workers who know the community. Approximately 1 million people live in this 2 sq. mile stretched of land. We also were invited into the homes of some of the sponsored children and got a firsthand look at the challenges these families face every day.
We were so blessed to have this opportunity to learn and see the work of MOHI up close and each of us were moved deeply.

GSC Travel with Purpose Trip - Day 2:
What a blessed day to be serving and visiting the Nidovaini Boys boarding school outside of Nairobi. We had the opportunity to worship with about 1,000 boys this morning. What a loud and joyful noise! The ride there took about 2 hours. Experience the morning with us below.
Our afternoon consisted of some relaxation and learning how to barter with the market vendors as we looked at their colorful wares.

Calling all crafters and makers!

We are still looking to fill a few spots for our upcoming Christmas Village & Artisan Fair on December 6, from 10 am to 2 pm.

Day 45- Pro-aging Revolution: Post about a legacy project: a journal, recipe book or mentorship effort.
Sharing our family stories is such a vital part of passing on values and connection to the next generations. Here's a piece of my story:

As kids growing up, we heard the story of distant relatives who were among the first casualties of the French & Indian War in what was called the Penn's Creek Massacre. The men folk were killed, the home burned and two young daughters became captives of the Indians and carried off to Ohio. Only the mother and one son were spared as they were away from the home at the time. The stories of the two girls have been told in two separate novels, but I have often pondered the heartache and faith of the mother and wife who lost so much--and still held on to hope which eventually found its reward.
I shared with my Dad the idea of writing her story, but never got it started. To date I have three chapters written--still hoping to finish it and keep that legacy of faith, hope and love alive.

This week the entire Environmental Services Team was celebrated with a special lunch to thank them for the fantastic work they do to support the entire Frederick Living community. Team members from Laundry and Housekeeping were also gifted a logoed T-shirt, key chain and microfiber cloth from our supplier Hillyard Cleaning Supplies.
Thank you so much everyone for the hard work behind the scenes that keeps our community healthy and sparkling clean.
