ZVC family! The 4th of July is almost here! 🇺🇸🎆

Loud noises, such as fireworks, during the holiday season can cause our pets some serious anxiety. This can present in many different ways, such as - howling, crying, whimpering, shaking, inappropriate urination/defecation, hiding and aggression just to name a few.

It is now time to prepare for any medications your pet may need during this firework season. We do require AT MINIMUM 24-48 hour turn around time for prescriptions. We must also have an updated exam for your pet to legally prescribe medications.

Please call well in advance to have a yearly exam and request a prescription refill before the fourth rolls around.

Dr. Sam and staff hope that your summer months are filled with laughter, fun and hours spent with you family both 2 and four legged.

This is a good illustration of puppy socialization needs, shared from Good as Gold Training, but I would also add that all of the listed exposure and experience needs to feel *safe* for the puppy. If s/he is nervous, tentative, or fearful the fear should be handled by backing off a little and reintroducing very slowly and with lots of praise, food and patience. Sometimes, for the sake of "socialization", owners push their puppies too far and too fast, and it can backfire. Good socialization requires that we "read" our puppies and help them feel safe as they navigate the sounds, textures, people and animals in their new world.

Pet owners beware!

Xylitol (artificial sweetener) has long been known to be toxic to our pets. In what we can only assume is a push to sound more “natural/organic”, in some products, this harmful sweetener has been renamed BIRCH SUGAR. This sweetener can be found in some gums, ice creams and peanut butters among other products. Please beware and keep those pet family members safe ❤️
