Charming Hispanic painting called 'La Partera' or 'The Midwife' by Victoria De Almeida.

It's very apt that the midwife is standing in the doorway. Midwives archetypally stand at thresholds....ushering in the baby from one world to another....guardian and safekeeper of the woman and family.

She sat at the back and they said she was shy,
She led from the front and they hated her pride,
They asked her advice and then questioned her guidance,
They branded her loud, then were shocked by her silence,
When she shared no ambition they said it was sad,
So she told them her dreams and they said she was mad,
They told her they'd listen, then covered their ears,
And gave her a hug while they laughed at her fears,
And she listened to all of it thinking she should,
Be the girl they told her to be best as she could,
But one day she asked what was best for herself,
Instead of trying to please everyone else,
So she walked to the forest and stood with the trees,
She heard the wind whisper and dance with the leaves,
She spoke to the willow, the elm and the pine,
And she told them what she'd been told time after time,
She told them she felt she was never enough,
She was either too little or far far too much,
Too loud or too quiet, too fierce or too weak,
Too wise or too foolish, too bold or too meek,
Then she found a small clearing surrounded by firs,
And she stopped...and she heard what the trees said to her,
And she sat there for hours not wanting to leave,
For the forest said nothing, it just let her breathe.

Add some dates to your daily diet during your last month of pregnancy!

Add some dates to your daily diet during your last month of pregnancy!

Dates have been used around the world for centuries as a natural approach to preparation for labor. Several studies now support their effectiveness. Though we don’t know exactly why, they do have an impact on the start and progress of labor - likely due to an impact on the hormone oxytocin which helps labor start and progress effectively.

A 2011 study found that women who ate dates starting at 36 weeks were:
🔸 Significantly more dilated when they got to the hospital
🔸 Had a significantly higher rate of intact membranes
🔸 Were significantly more likely to go into labor spontaneously (i.e. without induction)
🔸 And had nearly half the length of first stage of labor

A 2014 study found that women who ate dates from 37 weeks on had:
🔸 Greater cervical dilatation at admission
🔸 Higher success rates of labor induction when needed

A 2017 study concluded that all the above was accurate and yet another study found that eating dates in pregnancy led to less bleeding immediately after birth.

Any type of dates work! The ‘dose’ is about 2.5 ounces of dates ( ~6 to 8 small dates or ~4 larger dates) daily, starting at 36 or 37 weeks and until labor begins. I love eating them plain, but you can include them in my “herbal bliss bites” (recipe on my IGTV), use them to sweeten cashew or almond milk, or include them chopped in yogurt or oatmeal. Amazingly, they also haven’t been shown to be a problem for blood sugar.

Did you use dates to prep for your labor? Do you know a pregnant mama who is prepping for labor? Tag her in the comments below so she can learn about the power of this ancient medicine!

My babies would jump in the womb when they heard a loud noise. 🙂

My babies would jump in the womb when they heard a loud noise. 🙂

Posted • It’s amazing how much is going on before you even meet your little person. ⁣By the time a baby is born, he or she already knows and loves his mother’s voice. When a baby is only hours old, he can recognize speech-sounds from his mom’s native language. ⁣

Repost from

As well, babies develop a preference for the language they’ve heard for the last 9 months. ⁣They will also be able to recognize rhythm and patterns from stories read out loud before birth. ⁣Cool, right?⁣

A baby develops ears during the 2nd month of pregnancy. The ears begin to stick out from the head by 18 weeks of age. Around 22 - 24 weeks, your baby may begin to hear some noises from outside the womb. ⁣

While the ears develop early, your baby isn’t actually hearing until the auditory, brain and hearing pathways develop and work together. This typically occurs around 22 - 24 weeks. ⁣

The developing hearing system requires stimulation to develop properly. It needs stimulation from speech, music, and other normally occurring sounds to develop properly. ⁣So, talk to your baby, play music, and put up your feet and read a book out loud. Your baby is listening!⁣

It's true... Grammas CAN breastfeed their grandpeanuts!
09/02/2020

It's true... Grammas CAN breastfeed their grandpeanuts!

A grandmother in Vietnam breastfeeding her grandchild. It is a common practice in many cultures for a grandmother to relactate so that she may breastfeed her grandchild. It is truly an act of love.

UPDATE: We are getting a TON of questions about colostrum and induced lactation and relactation and how menopause affects this, etc! We will be going LIVE in 2 minutes with an IBCLC to answer any questions here!

UPDATE: A lot of people seem to be curious about how this is possible. Breastmilk production is all about supply and demand. The breasts can continue to make milk indefinitely as long as there is a demand for it. People also seem to be curious about how menopause might affect this. Pituitary glands are necessary in the production of breastmilk and menopause does not restrict the pituitary glands ability to function. So, yes, even after menopause it is still possible to produce enough milk to nourish a baby. Loving all of the conversation around this?! Aren't women's bodies just amazing? We can do so many things that we didn't even know 😉
