April has brought its share of rain, and with it, moments of reflection and patience. As we move toward May, we look forward to brighter days, spring flowers, and green grass.

This colorful and supportive display in Cancer Fighters Corner gives us pause to remember that life’s storms can’t take away our hope. Sometimes, the brightest rainbows are just around the corner.

Compassion lives here and our volunteers bring it to life every single day.

Since 2014, volunteers have given over 6,300 hours of their time to City of Hope Chicago through Spiritual Support, Community Outreach, Animal Therapy, and Patient Hospitality.

Volunteers, for instance, knit hats for chemotherapy patients, then launder them and package them in plastic bags for staff, like Syremba K. to hand out.

Some of our amazing volunteers are pictured here: Laura, Melody, Richard, Hayley, and Lori.

To all of our volunteers, thank you for what you do to support our patients!

When Nina Youabb was diagnosed with breast cancer, her life changed overnight.

But what followed was a powerful example of resilience, advocacy and community.

After receiving care at City of Hope Cancer Center Chicago, Nina transformed her experience into action — organizing a fundraising event called “In My Pink Era.” In just six weeks, the event brought together 175 supporters and raised $16,000 to advance cancer research.

Through her openness about her journey, Nina has inspired others in her community to speak about cancer, support one another and take action.

Her story is a reminder that even in life’s hardest moments, one person’s courage can spark a movement.

Thank you, Nina, for making hope possible.

Today is National High Five Day! 🙌

At our hospital, every high five means so much more — it’s a symbol of strength, courage, and the small victories that lead to big wins. From celebrating each patient who completes a round of treatment or receives a clean scan, we’re raising our hands to those who show up with resilience each day.

Drop a line in the comments to send encouragement to our incredible community. Together, we keep fighting, supporting, and celebrating every step forward.

From growing up on a farm in Iowa to working as a blacksmith, Steve O. was used to pushing through the pain. For years, he ignored persistent heartburn until one day when swallowing became too painful to ignore.

The diagnosis: stage 3 esophageal cancer.

Steve turned to City of Hope Cancer Center Chicago for surgery and chemotherapy. Today he's 13 years cancer-free and continuing to do what he loves: crafting ladles, spoons, forks, jewelry, and yard tools as a blacksmith.

His message is simple: Don’t ignore the signs. Persistent heartburn, difficulty swallowing and chest pain could be your body's warning.

It’s , and we’re celebrating every Tuesday in April with a delicious twist in our cafeteria! 🧀

Yesterday's feature was creamy brie paired with homemade blackberry jam on perfectly toasted bread — sweet, savory, and seriously comforting. Yum!

Here’s what else we have coming up:
• “The Western” – Pepper Jack, American cheese, crispy onion rings, and barbecue sauce
• “The Luigi” – Marinara, mozzarella, and parmesan for a classic Italian-inspired bite
• “The Sweet Goat” – Creamy goat cheese with a drizzle of honey

Stop by and treat yourself each Tuesday, and don’t miss a single one of these!

Jose S. was just 37 when a visit to the ER during a flare-up of ulcerative colitis led to a life-changing diagnosis: colorectal cancer.

“What you think at first is how long do I have to live?” he shared.

After surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, Jose is now cancer free and no longer has colitis. Following treatment, he lives with a renewed sense of freedom.

Jose shared these photos of him truly embracing life. He's traveling more and starting a new chapter in downtown Chicago.

As colorectal cancer rates rise in younger adults, Jose shares this advice:
“Listen to your body. Don’t be afraid of a diagnosis. Accept it, and then put on your boxing gloves and be ready for the fight of your life.”
