City of Hope Cancer Center Chicago oncologists are now on-site at Humboldt Park Health offering expanded oncology support. This ensures timely, local access to expert care and preventive screenings directly to the heart of Chicago's west side. Leading this effort is our own radiation oncologist, Kevin King, M.D., who will serve as medical director of the new program.

Want to learn more? Catch Dr. King and HPH President & CEO Jose R. Sanchez on
WBBM Newsradio this Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. on the At Issue show as they share how this collaboration will support a community long under-served in cancer care.

One year ago, Barb G. could barely stand. After four rounds of chemotherapy for Stage 4 large B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma, she had lost her strength, her independence, and nearly her life. Twice, her family was told she might not make it through the night.

But today, Barb stands strong — a survivor, and a living testament to hope.

When her local hospital ran out of options, Barb sought a second opinion at City of Hope Chicago and met Dr. Tulio Rodriguez, who gave her something she hadn’t had in months: choices. With his compassion and expertise, she found her lifeline — an autologous stem cell transplant, available thanks to groundbreaking research and philanthropy.

“City of Hope doesn’t just treat cancer; they drive the breakthroughs that cure it,” Barb said. “The generosity of others 20 years ago made my treatment possible today.”

Barb's courage reminds us that every gift, every act of generosity, and every moment of compassion brings us one step closer to cures. 💛

If you’re inspired to make more stories like Barb’s possible, support City of Hope this Giving Tuesday.

We're proud to announce a new collaboration with Humboldt Park Health! Together, we're bringing prevention education, early cancer detection and comprehensive treatment to the Humboldt Park community.

Humboldt Park Health (HPH) is a 200-bed acute care facility serving Chicago’s west side for over 130 years.

“We are dedicated to bringing the highest standard of cancer care to every person who needs it," said Pete Govorchin, president, City of Hope Cancer Center Chicago.

This program marks an exciting step forward in our commitment to ensure that every person — no matter where they live — has access to world-class cancer care and the hope it brings. Beginning December 1, City of Hope oncologists will be on-site providing cancer care at HPH.

At 46, Michelle J. of Milwaukee was the picture of health. A lifelong vegetarian, avid jogger, and non-smoker, she lived a vibrant, active lifestyle. But in the summer of 2015, everything changed.

“I reached into a cupboard for a glass, and it felt extra heavy,” Michelle recalls. “A few days later, my gym bag felt the same. Using my left arm became harder and harder. Even a simple thing like washing dishes was tough.” On July 20 during a morning jog, Michelle’s leg buckled multiple times – something completely out of character.

An MRI revealed the life-altering diagnosis: Stage 4B lung cancer which had spread to her brain.

“The night I learned the diagnosis, I curled up in a ball and sobbed and sobbed,” she said. “It felt unreal.”

With courage, Michelle began her treatment journey. She had surgery and radiation on eight brain tumors and eventually a lung lobe resection surgery. Since 2015, she has been on a targeted therapy pill, part of a wellness regime, allowing her to live each day to the fullest.

This December 3, Michelle will turn 57. She is profoundly grateful for each birthday since her diagnosis.

This National Family Caregivers Month, we want to recognize Monique D., L.S.W., a behavioral health therapist at our hospital, who brings a unique experience to her profession, having cared for her mother, and now for her stepfather.

"Knowing first-hand the emotional difficulty that exists when watching someone you love battles cancer, caregivers don’t realize that they each have their own specific cancer journey separate from the patient," said Monique.

Monique's mother, Pamela, lost her battle to stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer in 2018, but today, Monique cares for her stepfather, Jon, who has stage 1 papillary thyroid cancer and kidney disease.

Monique recommends journaling every day because there are always emotions present, always questions, always fears, always worries. But journaling gives you an outlet to express your emotions during tough times.

In 2022, Stage 4 lung cancer left lifelong truck driver Jeff B. so weak, he had to put the brakes on his career. Today, the 64-year-old from Waukesha County, Wisconsin, is celebrating a major milestone — climbing back into his 18-wheeler.

Jeff beat the odds after completing 21 cycles of immunotherapy and making the life-changing decision to quit smoking. His last two scans came back clear and he is currently cancer free.

“Keeping myself moving is key,” Jeff said, "You got to just power through it!"

We’re proud to celebrate Jeff’s strength, determination, and incredible progress on his journey back to health. ❤️
