GLP-1 medications slow down digestion.
That means food can stay in your stomach longer than usual- even if you’ve followed fasting instructions before surgery.
During anesthesia, this increases the risk of stomach contents coming back up and entering the lungs (aspiration), which can be a very serious complication.
That’s why we ask patients to stop their GLP-1 before surgery and why it’s so important to be honest with your surgical team about taking it.
Our goal is never to judge or delay care. Our #1 priority is keeping you safe under anesthesia.
When in doubt, always tell your surgical team about any medications you’re taking.
