Schneider Regional Medical Center is a healthcare system comprised of three facilities operating with one vision: "To be the health care provider of choice to the residents of the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean." Virgin Islands' facilities:

The Roy Lester Schneider Hospital serves the medical needs of patients from throughout the Caribbean. As the only acute medical care facility on St. Thomas, it is a critical component in the comprehensive strategy for the health and welfare of our community and region. Myrah Keating Smith Community Health Center, located on St. John, is the island’s only 24-hour outpatient health facility offering both primary and preventive health services. MKSCHC utilizes Telemedicine, in collaboration with Cleveland Clinic (Fla), to increase local access to certain specialties, and is the authorized primary care facility for clients of the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. The facility also provides services in women’s health, well baby care, immunizations, nutritional counseling, immunizations, radiology, laboratory, minor surgery, and community education. The Charlotte Kimelman Cancer Institute is a comprehensive cancer care facility, providing a range of services including radiation oncology, chemotherapy, surgical and prosthesis consultation, clinical research, support services, as well as professional and public education lectures and seminars. The concept for design and the technologies in use is state-of-the-art, intended to support a fully patient centered facility.

For Lead Medical Technologist Joshua Hazel, excellent patient care begins in the lab—where every result can shape a patient’s next step. He approaches each sample with precision and empathy, always reminding himself that the work he does behind the scenes supports every person who walks through SRMC’s doors.

Communication is central to Joshua’s approach. Whether guiding someone who feels lost in the hospital or explaining how lab testing helps detect serious conditions early, he focuses on easing anxiety and helping patients feel supported and informed. He shared how one conversation even inspired a patient to consider joining the same profession, showing how small moments can spark meaningful change.

Joshua says his motivation comes from a personal mantra that carries him through demanding days:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

He incorporates SRMC’s pillars by respecting patient privacy, communicating clearly, and producing accurate, reliable results that help providers deliver the best care possible. He understands that his work creates a ripple effect—empowering patients to make lifestyle changes that positively impact their families and community.

Grounded, compassionate, and dedicated to excellence, Joshua embodies the spirit of the What Would I Want campaign and the mission of SRMC.

For Brittany Smith, accuracy and compassion go hand in hand. As Laboratory Manager at Schneider Regional Medical Center, she leads her team with one simple but powerful reminder: every sample represents a real person — someone’s loved one, someone’s world.

When asked what she would want from her own healthcare team, Brittany reflected, “I’d want accuracy, understanding, and compassion. Each test, each sample, has a patient attached to it.” That mindset guides every decision she makes and is the foundation of how she inspires her staff to deliver results that reflect not just technical excellence, but genuine care.

Brittany recalls one moment that captures this perfectly — a patient who had been sent back and forth between departments trying to complete his food handler’s card. Seeing his frustration, Brittany personally stepped in to help. She reopened the lab, tracked down his test results, and even walked him to the Department of Health to make sure everything was resolved. “It was just taking that little extra step,” she said, “but it made his whole day turn around.”
Her daily approach centers on communication and presence — making sure patients know they’re being cared for, even if it’s as simple as saying, “We have someone on the way, and we’re here for you.” That reassurance, she believes, is what turns an anxious moment into a comforting one.

Brittany’s career began as a 19-year-old phlebotomist, and through dedication and love for the field, she earned her associate’s, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. Now leading the lab, she encourages her team to uphold the same empathy and excellence that guided her own journey.

Her guiding philosophy is one that continues to shape her leadership and patient care:

“Become the change you want to see in the world.”

To Brittany, every patient deserves to be treated as if they were family. Every interaction — no matter how brief — is an opportunity to make someone feel safe, respected, and valued.

With over 28 years of dedicated service at Schneider Regional Medical Center, Ms. Denise Hodge has built a reputation for excellence, compassion, and pride in her work. For her, patient care is deeply personal — it’s about ensuring that everyone who walks through SRMC’s doors feels heard, respected, and valued.

“The Lord didn’t bring us this far to just drop us off. He brought us this far for a purpose — and everything happens for a reason.”

That belief has guided Denise throughout her career. She recalls helping a frustrated patient who felt unheard by others. Instead of letting her leave, Denise listened with patience, took the time to gather the records she needed, and made sure her experience ended in calm and confidence. “By the time she left,” Denise shared, “her pressure went down, and she told me she felt cared for. That’s what it’s all about.”

In her daily work, Denise is meticulous — double-checking every patient’s information, ensuring accuracy, and offering kindness even in routine tasks. She knows that small gestures, like offering to fill out a form or greeting a patient warmly, can transform their experience.

Her dedication is rooted in family and faith. Having once been an advocate for her sister’s care at SRMC, Denise was inspired to dedicate her life to helping others feel supported through their own journeys. She’s also a mentor to her colleagues, reminding them to communicate openly, work together, and always “do everything to the best of your ability.”

As she reflects on nearly three decades of service, Denise encourages the SRMC team to aim high: “We are like eagles — we’re going to soar to higher heights and shoot for the stars. Once we envision it, we’ll get there.” 💙
