A Christmas Message

At Christmas time, we pause to say how thankful we are for you each day.
For trusting us with your little ones, and walking together as each step is won.
We celebrate progress—big and small and honor the effort behind it all.
Through patience, care, and love so true, it’s a joy to partner and serve with you.
May this season bring love, comfort, and cheer, hope and warmth throughout the year.
May joy and peace fill all you do, Merry Christmas—with love from us to you.

It takes a village to raise a child. You all met Alice while we were pregnant working at ReUse, and you were the first to meet her 5lbs home from the hospital to the warehouse. We were so moved by the outpouring of support from the STT matriarchy who taught us how to be parents while working.

This week in crisis our support network sprang into action for Alice. Thank you to loyal customer Ms. Patricia Sprauve for contacting us to arrange autism services. We didn’t know in the early days her meltdowns in the store were sensory overloads. Our customers and staff would get worried there was something seriously medically wrong with her screaming full force. Now we know it was all just too much for her sensitive little nervous system.

Ms. Whitfield-Rhymer and Ms. Robles from Virgin Islands Department of Health Infants & Toddlers Program are angels who not only taught our nonverbal autistic daughter how to draw a circle and walk a straight line, but played with her and made her feel welcome and normal. They didn’t have to tell us their personal experience autism parenting, but they did, and just being able to talk about something as simple as the war over tooth brushing and hair helped. It’s a unique 36hr day you don’t even realize you’re running until someone puts their hand on your shoulder and says this is too much to bear, let us help you. We love that instead of saying CANNOT on Alice’s assessment, they said CAN’T YET.
God bless you. Thank you ❤️

Act No. 8369, the Women, Children, and Families Act, which I authored in 2020.

This law gives you TWO HOURS PER MONTH, PER CHILD to visit your child’s school, without loss of pay or benefits. That means you can meet with teachers, counselors, or simply spend time present in your child’s learning environment. So…. if you have 3 children, you have 6 hours a month!

It also means that if you work for a company receiving tax benefits through the EDA, the law also applies to you.

Please take advantage of this law and stay active in your child’s education and growth. Our children succeed when parents, families, and schools work hand in hand.

For clarity, here is the language from the Act:

(a)Parents, foster parents, or legal guardians who are full time employees of the Government of the Virgin Islands, its instrumentalities, autonomous and semi autonomous agencies, as well as employees of employers who receive benefits under the Industrial Development Program and Act No. 4740, are entitled to two hours per month, per child, off from their jobs, without loss of pay or benefits, to visit their child’s school in grades K through 12.

(b) Parents or guardians must submit proof of the school visit to their employer within 48 hours to qualify for paid time off.

(c) This benefit applies during each school’s academic year and during each school’s official school hours.

This law can be found in Title 17, Chapter 9, Subchapter I of the Virgin Islands Code, Section 86a.

Let us use this opportunity to show up for our children. They deserve our time, our presence, and our support.
