Virgin Islands history is Black history.
From builders and engineers to policymakers, physicians, educators, and public servants, Black leadership has shaped every sector of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The systems we rely on, the institutions that serve our communities, and the infrastructure that supports daily life all reflect generations of vision, advocacy, and excellence.
This legacy is not confined to the past. It lives on through those who continue to lead, govern, heal, teach, and build with purpose—strengthening the territory and shaping its future.
At J. Benton Construction, our role is a small but meaningful one. Through the revitalization, restoration, and construction of these spaces, we help ensure that the structures named after great Virgin Islands leaders remain strong, functional, and ready to serve future generations.
We approach this work with care and respect—understanding that these are more than buildings. They are physical reminders of legacy, leadership, and progress that deserve to endure.
This month, we honor the individuals who built the foundation of the Virgin Islands and reflect on how today’s work helps preserve the spaces that carry their names forward.
