Modern Aging

Modern Aging Improving the quality of life for our elders with high quality, innovative products and resources. I’m talking about design and functionality.

A vibrant, active woman with discerning taste, my mother suffered a debilitating stroke in 2001 and now suffers from Parkinsons. An artist and a restauranteur, she didn’t want her home to feel like a hospital ward. But that was nearly impossible with the kinds of in-home healthcare equipment available. I created Modern Aging to help the elderly and infirm maintain a more home-like atmosphere as they need to integrate healthcare equipment into their daily lives. In my travels around the world, I have discovered that we have choices in terms of our healthcare products. I’ve imported wheelchairs that don’t look clunky, that aren’t creaky, that don’t break your back when you lift them to put them in the back of the car. Walkers actually do come in colors other than drab gray, and they don’t have to weigh so much either. My mother relies on forty-plus pieces of equipment to help her move, eat, sleep, bathe, medicate and toilet herself. For so long my family and I assumed that the devices being pushed online or by insurance companies were all that was out there, even if they weren’t a good fit for Mom and sometimes even dangerous. So we jerry-rigged and made do. Friends from overseas were appalled by what we were using as we tried to make Mom’s life safer and maybe a little easier, and they suggested alternatives only available in their countries, with a particular emphasis on goods available in Japan, where the elderly are venerated, and caring for them is a source of pride for the caretaker. I want to share with you the products I have found in countries where elders and their families do all they can to see that parents and infirm loved ones live in their homes, their sanctuaries, until the end of their lives.

Our Story

Welcome to the Modern Age! Our entire family has been caring for our mom (and now dad) for the last 17 years. Mom suffered a sudden debilitating stroke that left her with right side paresis. She was a healthy, fit, restauranteur who rarely got sick so it completely caught us off guard. We spent years trying to navigate the health care system without going completely broke and losing everything our parents worked so hard for. We had NO idea what to do…just praying that she would get better and life could return to normal. But, this WAS our new normal. We cried a lot, stressed out a lot, fought a lot, but also learned a ton and grew closer because of it. And eventually we learned to laugh and find joy again.

Navigating the healthcare system is not for the weary. We made A LOT of mistakes along the way. There are lots of holes and problems with the current system. As we found ourselves getting older and knowing that this population is only growing, we realized that there is much we need to do to change the current way we approach the issues and systems to care for our aging population.

Many of us worry about the unknowns of the future. What will happen to our parents as they grow older? Who will care for them? What about me? What about those of us who are childless? How will we pay for any potentially needed care? How do we relieve ourselves of the stresses associated with caregiving? The questions go on and on.

We want to change the way we think about aging and caregiving. This starts with having a dialogue, thus our YouTube Channel, The Modern Age TV! We will sit down with top experts and get sound advice and innovative practical tips on how to make our lives easier and safer as we age, whether we are a caregiver or need care. We want to empower you with modern knowledge and innovative tools so that you or your loved one can enter this phase while retaining the quality of life that you desire with comfort, choice and dignity.
