WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE INSOMNIA?
🛌 Sleep plays an extremely important role in our physical and mental health. Insomnia is a common sleep disorder characterized by difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, or waking up too early and being unable to return to sleep.
Both acute and chronic insomnia can have significant impacts on health and quality of life. In reality, sleep disorders can lead to:
🔻 Fatigue, lethargy, and a constant state of drowsiness and lack of alertness.
🔻 A weaker immune system compared to that of a normal person.
🔻 Increased risk of arrhythmias, hypertension, myocardial infarction, diabetes, stroke, and resulting mortality.
🔻 Increased risk of cancer.
🔻 Dry skin, premature aging, and slower healing of skin wounds.
🔻 Irritability, mood swings, difficulty controlling emotions, feelings of loneliness, and increased susceptibility to depression.
🔻 A lack of energy leading to overeating and consumption of unhealthy foods, causing weight gain.
🔻 Hallucinations, headaches, dizziness, and a higher likelihood of traffic accidents.
So, how much sleep is enough? This varies from person to person, but typically, adults need 6 to 8 hours of sleep per night. Sometimes, many adults experience short-term (acute) insomnia lasting from a few days to a few weeks, often as a result of stress or traumatic events. However, some people suffer from long-term (chronic) insomnia that can last for several months or more.
👉 Insomnia can be a primary issue or a symptom associated with other physical or mental health conditions. See a doctor immediately if you are experiencing symptoms to receive timely evaluation and treatment.
