Our last tip for World Mental Health day is...

Tip 3: Take a break from the news
While it might feel useful to keep on top of global events and feel informed, we know the news is skewed to focus on the negative stories as this is what keeps us engaged. However, we know that this is only a small picture of what is really happening every day.

Decide how much news feels useful and when it starts to make you feel anxious or low, create some time off, perhaps only looking at the headlines once a day and turning off your notifications or removing it from your phone.

Taking time out doesn't mean you are not responsible and you won't be left behind, it will make you feel better and enjoy what is going on in your life today.

Our next tip to look after your mental health this World Mental Health Day is...

Tip 2: Have a screen mini-break

You don't need to go away to have a break from your screen, and the break doesn't have to be a break-up. Instead schedule some time away from your screen and the notifications, use that time to go for a phone free walk or do a body scan (where you notice the physical sensations in your body and become more aware of how your body feels).
Doing this regularly will help to improve your mood and concentration, you can use this time to do some of those small positive actions you created that will make a difference to your day.

It's World Mental Health day and we are sharing some of our top tips to help you if you feel overwhelmed by the relentless negative news and global events.

Tip 1.
Focus on what you can control.

As Solution Focused Hypnotherapists this is one of our core beliefs, focusing on everything beyond your control is sure to fill you with anxiety and dread, the more we can re-direct our attention and energy to the small things we can do that will make a difference the more positive and hopeful we feel.

Start small, we don't need to tackle huge challenges or take on big tasks to make a difference, in fact we say change starts small and grows to become big and meaningful.

So what is one small thing you can do today that will make a difference to you or someone you love?

We would love to hear in the comments what you are going to focus on.

What is the evidence behind solution focused hypnotherapy?

Emma Treby, from Inspired to Change, talks to us about some extremely insightful research carried out with Northumbria Police Force.
Results of the study were exceptionally positive in terms of outcomes of SFH. Emma explains how a score of overall wellbeing was used to measure each individuals outcome over an average of 8 sessions, the results might just surprise you!

Time for our final tip to succeed at your 2025 New Year's Resolution;

10. Ditch the resolutions … well, sort of.

It has become a long-running joke that most people have given up on their resolutions by the end of January. In fact, one study suggests less than 25% of people stay committed to them for over 30 days. Maybe instead of making ‘a New Year’s resolution’, try just setting the intention for how you would like your life to be. After all, if a resolution is something that you go into expecting to fail, the likelihood of success is significantly reduced.

Whatever your goal is for the New Year, make it positive, make it irresistible, and focus on how good you will feel when you have achieved it.

Our top 10 New Year's Resolution tips reach the penultimate tip;

9. Go public with it

If you feel comfortable with doing so, put your intentions out there to people who will support you. Better yet, if you can find someone else who has a similar goal to you, become each other’s champions.

Our New Year's Resolution's top 10 tips continue;

8. Reward yourself

Plan something nice to reward yourself for achieving your smaller goals. The brain is programmed to move towards things that give us pleasure, so by making goals achievable and celebrating the little victories, we are motivated to keep going.

Our top tips for 2025 New Year's Resolutions continue;

7. You can get back on the wagon
Another saying used in Solution Focused therapy is that ‘There’s no such thing as failure, only feedback’. Now, you may or may not agree with that statement, but the premise of it is that if something doesn’t go to plan, learn from it, do something different and then get back on the wagon again. It took Thomas Edison 1,000 attempts before he successfully invented the lightbulb, but after each attempt, he picked himself up, learnt something from it, and kept trying. If you find that you slip up, notice how much you have achieved up to that point, and remember there is no better time than that moment to dust yourself off and continue moving towards your goal.

Our top tips for 2025 New Year's Resolutions continue;

6. Fake it until you make it

It might surprise you, but the brain really can’t tell the difference between what you imagine and what is reality. You can harness this by using the power of visualisation to imagine that you have already achieved your target, and this will in turn make the brain much more comfortable and confident in achieving your goal Solution Focused Hypnotherapists use this approach in their clinics with people who want to improve their performance. They have them see themselves as having taken the perfect shot, or having won the competition already, and it makes a huge difference. Both world champion snooker player Kyren Wilson and former world super middleweight champion boxer Glenn Catley have publicly talked about using a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist to help them perform at their best and it’s very likely that in their sessions, positive visualisation would have been a key factor. If it’s good enough for world champions, it’s good enough for you.
