🌟 UNDERSTANDING NEURODIVERSITY: A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON NEURODIVERGENT AND NEUROTYPICAL 🌟

In today’s society, the concept of neurodiversity is becoming increasingly popular. It acknowledges that each person’s brain functions in unique ways, creating a rich diversity in how we think, feel, and act. This article aims to help you better understand the two main groups within neurodiversity — neurotypical and neurodivergent, as well as related conditions like ADHD, autism, and Down syndrome.

What Are Neurotypical and Neurodivergent?
🍀 Neurotypical refers to individuals whose brain functions in ways that society deems "normal" or "typical." They typically do not experience neurological or cognitive developmental challenges. These individuals can easily adapt to social norms and learn information without significant difficulty.
🌸 On the other hand, neurodivergent refers to individuals whose brains function differently, which can affect their cognitive abilities, learning, or behavior. Conditions like autism, ADHD, and Down syndrome are prime examples of neurodivergence. In neurodiversity theory, neurodivergent individuals are considered to have a "difference," not a "deficit" in brain functioning.

Common Neurodivergent Conditions
📌 Autism Spectrum Disorder: Individuals on the autism spectrum may have different ways of thinking and feeling, but they may also possess unique talents and abilities in areas like mathematics, music, and the arts.
📌 ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder): People with ADHD struggle to maintain attention, control impulses, and complete tasks. However, those diagnosed with ADHD often have higher creativity, unique thinking, and excellent problem-solving abilities.
📌 Down Syndrome: This is a genetic condition that affects intellectual and physical development. People with Down syndrome typically have an IQ lower than average but can still live independently and contribute positively to society.
📌 In addition, some learning disorders and challenges with processing emotions, sensory processing, or Tourette syndrome also fall under the neurodivergent category.

Embracing Neurodiversity: Why It Matters
💡 Every individual’s abilities are unique, and differences in brain structure and function are natural. Neurodiversity not only helps us view people fairly but also encourages societies to build inclusive and supportive environments. People with neurodivergent brains are not "flawed"; they are part of the diversity of humanity, offering invaluable contributions to the community.
It’s crucial to shift our perceptions of neurodivergence and foster understanding and connection instead of stigma and discrimination.

🌱 If you or a loved one shows signs of conditions like ADHD or autism spectrum disorder, don’t hesitate to seek guidance from mental health professionals. Recognizing and understanding these differences is the first step toward supporting individuals in reaching their full potential.

🚩 VICTIM-BLAMING: A DEEP DIVE INTO A HARMFUL SOCIAL TREND 🚩

In light of recent headlines, such as the scandal surrounding rapper Diddy, it’s crucial to shed light on a deeply ingrained psychological issue: victim-blaming. At its core, victim-blaming shifts accountability from the perpetrator to the victim, leading to harmful consequences—not just for individuals but for society as a whole.

⁉ Why do people do it? Psychological research suggests that many of us are influenced by the just-world hypothesis—the belief that the world is fair and people get what they deserve. While this mindset can help us feel secure, it often leads to irrational judgment, especially in cases of abuse or injustice.

Imagine this: you hear about someone experiencing harm, and your first thought is, "What did they do to deserve it?" This reflex might seem small, but it reveals a need to reconcile discomfort with the idea that bad things can happen to anyone—even to us.

💡 But let’s step back. Victim-blaming perpetuates silence, shame, and fear. Survivors who already bear emotional scars may struggle to seek help, knowing they might face criticism rather than support.

We can break this cycle with compassion and critical thinking:
👉 Ask yourself: Am I holding the right person accountable?
👉 Empathize: Consider how hard it might be for someone to speak up.
👉 Educate others: Speak out when you see victim-blaming and advocate for justice.

🌱 At Vietnam-France Psychology Institute, we believe that understanding human behavior can empower us to build a more compassionate society. It’s not just about pointing out what’s wrong—it’s about learning how to do better.

Let’s start now. Next time a scandal breaks or someone shares their story, let’s listen without judgment. Because when we create safe spaces for survivors, we move one step closer to a world where accountability—and not blame—prevails.

🌱 POST-TRAUMATIC GROWTH - TRANSFORMING YOUR LIFE 🌱

Sometimes life throws at us events that come along and knock a person down, causing loss, and making a person feel there're no ways out. The invisible wounds of psychological trauma don't heal and could also leave one lost and disconnected with everything that surrounds them. Yet more beautifully stunning than such pain can be is growth in its wake: becoming stronger, wiser, and learning to love life even more.

🌟 Through post-traumatic growth, we learn to appreciate life from a different view and cherish each meaningful moment. The more you overcome your pains, the more each laugh and loving gesture feels so much more important than it ever was. And most importantly, you will realize: "I am stronger than I ever thought."

👉 The post-traumatic growth is not just about getting over the pain but also about being able to re-discover your self-becoming stronger, braver, and deeper. You learn to rise above it, and that teaches you to move on with a heart full of love and thankfulness over what has happened and who you have become. Family and friends, and at times strangers, become so dear in times of distress. Relationships deepen so one doesn't feel alone in the struggle of getting back. Many a time, narrating one's story is not only a way to discharge emotion but to heal the lesion of the soul.

🍀 If you have not experienced post-traumatic growth, know that that is totally normal! Not everyone finds lessons from painful experiences, and that is absolutely all right. Instead, what is most important is to be able to focus on emotional processing and to weaken the impact of these traumatic events on your daily life. Personal growth after trauma isn't easy, but the benefits it brings can change your life. It is a process that will help you become stronger, love life more, and find your true self.

🤝🤝 NO BULLYING AND VIOLENCE - A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY 🤝🤝

❓ Did you know that this week is the Bullying No Way: National Week of Action, a part of Australia's National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence?

🌟 The National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence is a day dedicated to raising awareness and taking a firm stand against bullying in Australia. This year’s Bullying No Way: National Week of Action is where Australians engage in activities emphasizing the importance of community, compassion, and shared responsibility in addressing violence.

🌍 Not only in Australia but in every country, including Vietnam, whether at home, in schools, workplaces, or on social media, bullying and violence should not occur in our communities.

💡 Each of us needs to increase our understanding of bullying and violence, stand up, and support those who may be suffering silently. This could be anyone: from children and students to adults, women, and the elderly.

👬 For victims of bullying and violence, seeking psychological support and help is especially important. In Vietnam, there are approximately 1,600 cases of school violence each year. The National Hotline for Child Protection (111) reported an 11% increase in recorded cases in the first half of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022. This can lead to many psychological issues, ranging from low self-esteem, shame, and fear, to disorders like depression and anxiety.

☄ If you know and wish to help anyone going through these difficulties, please reach out to the relevant authorities and psychological support experts. Creating a strong, united, and safe community is a responsibility we all share.

👉 The Vietnam-France Psychology Institute has leading psychologists and therapists for children and adults. Stand up to protect yourself and those around you by contacting us when psychological support is needed for victims experiencing bullying and violence.

🌟 INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY: CELEBRATING THE VOICES OF FUTURE! 🌟

“The power of youth is the common wealth for the entire world. The faces of young people are the faces of our past, our present, and our future. No segment in the society can match the power, idealism, enthusiasm, and courage of the young people.” - Kailash Satyarthi.

Today, August 12th, is a day to celebrate the incredible energy, potential, and creativity of young people around the world, as well as their resilient, relentless journeys.

💡 This is a day dedicated to highlighting the impact of young people on their communities, through activism, innovative creations, or simply their big dreams and aspirations. With opportunities come challenges facing our world today, young voices are more important than ever. International Youth Day is also a reminder of our shared responsibility to support future generations. It is a time for us all to reflect and consider how to provide better opportunities and resources for the youth and encourage them to unlock their full potential.

🌍 This year's International Youth Day theme focuses on youth mental health. With the growing pressures of modern life, supporting youth mental health has never been more crucial. Mental well-being is a key component of personal and professional success. As parents, leaders, educators, and mentors, we need to create environments where young people can thrive mentally and emotionally.

🌠 In Vietnam, there is growing recognition and understanding of mental health issues among adolescents, reflecting a global trend. However, Vietnamese teenagers need more mental health education than ever, as do their families, educators, and schools. We need to understand adolescent development and mental health complexities to promote and create healthier environments that allow them to reach their full potential.

👬 Join the Vietnam-France Institute of Psychology in celebrating International Youth Day by committing to support young people in our communities and increasing understanding of youth psychology with some of the Institute's articles in the comments section. Together, we can create a brighter and healthier future for everyone.

Empowering Hanoi’s Future: The Impact of Youth Counseling 🫂

🗣️ “They’re young! They’ll get over it.”

If you’ve ever heard this statement while struggling in your teenage years, know that you are not alone. Adolescence is a challenging period characterized by fast and often unanticipated changes in the physical, emotional, and mental state of a person. But the issue of teenage mental health care remains neglected. According to reports from the World Health Organization (WHO), one out of seven young adults globally may be affected by some form of mental disorder. Vietnam’s case is even worse—one out of every five teenagers is affected. However, only eight percent of Vietnamese adolescents with these challenges seek professional assistance. One aim of the Vietnam - France Psychology Institute (VFPI) is to improve awareness of mental health support for Vietnamese youths.

🤔 Understanding the Adolescent Journey
Adolescence marks a turning point in life when people go through significant changes. There are tense academic pressures to meet high expectations placed by teachers and parents, and unique social interaction factors that result in various challenges. In addition to these conflicts, puberty can call into question issues of identity for teenagers and makes them feel insecure, especially when there are younger individuals around or elders who cannot quite understand what they are going through.

💡Importance of Adolescent Counseling
Half of all mental illness cases in Vietnam begin during adolescence. Organizations like VFPI play a major role in recognizing what teens are going through and providing age specific support. By addressing mental health issues early on, VFPI helps prepare teenagers for healthier lives as they grow older.

🤝 Empowering Individuals with Personalized Care
From online resources to face-to-face counseling sessions, VFPI offers diverse psychological services to its clients so that everyone can access help in their own way and feel comfortable doing so. The individual counseling approach has been emphasized by VFPI so young people can freely share their thoughts, fears, and worries without being afraid of facing judgment.

🏋️ Creating Resilience for the Future
The benefits of counseling at an early stage are well documented. Teens who go through the counseling process show lower levels of depression, anxiety and su***de as they grow to adults. VFPI equips young people with the coping mechanisms and emotional strength that will help them navigate through life’s challenges boldly.

❣️ Join VFPI in Promoting Adolescent Mental Health
VFPI recommends that if you or anyone you know is having difficulties with these pressures, consider seeking assistance quickly. When we prioritize mental wellness today, we can raise a generation full of resilient, thriving adults tomorrow. Let us come together to support the Vietnamese youth in their journey to achieve and maintain psychological stability.

Adolescence demands attention and support because it is a transitional period for many people. VFPI is committed to advocating for mental health services while taking into account the specific needs that the youth encounter. Valuing mental health literacy and early interventions helps ensure that less adolescents will face isolation because of their personal struggles.

💡PSYCHOLOGICAL TIPS FOR WORKPLACE SUCCESS 💡

➡️ July is one of the most difficult months of the year to report to work—children are on summer break and the heat can be a distraction—proving it a challenge to be in the office every day. Remaining productive on the job amidst these circumstances can feel like a battle on your mental and physical well-being. The Vietnam-France Psychology Institute (VFPI) is committed to uncovering the psychological factors contributing to workplace success despite these obstacles. There have been studies conducted and insights acquired on how colleagues can stay motivated through the implementation of practical tools:

😁🧠 Emotional Intelligence (EI) at the Workplace: The EI studies of Daniel Goleman, in which he emphasizes its critical role in both personal and professional success, concluded that qualities like self regulation, empathy and social skills are much more important than IQ in determining quality of life. According to him, EI is a skill that people can learn to develop significantly, influencing leadership and team cohesion. In the workplace, where colleague relationships matter most, the application of EI principles will improve harmonious working environments as well as productivity levels. Integrate EI principles into your office space by highlighting social interaction and self-awareness.

🫂🧠 Motivation Strategies: According to Deci and Ryan’s Self Determination Theory, human beings are naturally driven by three basic psychological needs: autonomy (a state of being in control over one’s own actions), competence (the need for feeling efficient) and relatedness (social connectedness). These needs further encourage intrinsic motivation as essential to long-term goal achievement, leading to increased personal satisfaction and growth. Combine this theory with the communal values ingrained in your workplace to come up with motivational strategies targeting the personal aspirations of colleagues while also considering them as members of distinct groups and communities. An alignment between organizational goals and personal values can assist leaders in empowering employees toward a productive workforce.

🗣️🧠 Communication Dynamics and Conflict Resolution: Cross-cultural communication theories such as those made by Hofstede show how cultural values influence styles and behaviors of communication. Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, including individualism-collectivism and power distance, explain why different cultures behave differently within workplaces. Understanding this theory is important in fostering effective communication in Hanoi work environments where professional hierarchy and indirect communication are cultural pillars. Additionally, being cognizant of these workplace dynamics can help mitigate potential conflict by facilitating a common baseline of understanding.

🙋🧠 Leadership Styles in Hanoi’s Multicultural Workplaces: The Global Leadership and Organizational Behavior Effectiveness (GLOBE) Project research on leadership identifies traits universal and specific to cultures that contribute to effective leadership across various countries. The findings stress the significance of appreciating the influence of culture on values, practices, and leader behavior as criteria for effective leadership all around the world. Culturally endorsed leadership theories are indicative of a values centered approach towards developing good leaders. For multicultural workplaces in Hanoi, it is vital for a leader to demonstrate competence for one’s culture and its needs because these attributes are key.

📩 We invite you to join VFPI on an exploration of the intersection between psychology and workplace success in Hanoi. Feel free to share how you are planning on integrating any of the above insights into your workplace culture. Let’s brainstorm together ways that will make Hanoi’s business world persevere in spite of summer barriers.

Stay tuned for more evidence-based psychological tips and strategies for mental wellness brought to you by VFPI!

🌞☀️SEASONAL WELLNESS: STAYING HAPPY IN THE HANOI HEAT ☀️🌞

With an average temperature of 29°C, July is the hottest month of the year in Hanoi. As we progress deeper into the summer season, it is important to reflect on how we can keep our mental well-being intact despite the rising temperature. At the Vietnam-France Psychology Institute (VFPI), we are cognizant of the impact that heat stress can have on our lives, both day-to-day and long-term.

Heat stress does not only cause physical discomfort; it can also worsen psychological symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, and even aggression (Rony and Alamgir, 2023). These impacts are exacerbated in urban areas like Hanoi that easily absorb and radiate heat, making it difficult to find comfort in the humidity. Recognizing and addressing the relationship between temperature and emotional well-being is vital in the context of high heat living.

🔍💡The following are strategies we can implement to to help us remain mentally strong in the hot weeks to come:

🚰Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! The importance of staying hydrated cannot be overstated. Drinking enough water is not only necessary for physical health, but for mood regulation and cognitive function as well. Carry a container of water with you and aim to drink the equivalent of eight cups of water in a day.

🏞️Find shade and cooling spots! There are many “secret” oases in Hanoi—from greenery parks to air-conditioned cafes. Even walking briefly through shaded areas can greatly improve your mood. Locate your favorite cooling environments to rest your mind and body, and make a point to visit at least one spot each day.

🗓️Change your schedule! Arrange activities outside when the temperature will be less warm, such as early mornings or late evenings. Generally, try to restrict being outdoors from 10:00 - 16:00 to prevent heat-related issues. You can still make time to go out and enjoy the city during non-peak times.

🫁Mindful breathing! Sometimes, heat can make us feel suffocated or anxious. Practice slow breathing exercises to help yourself relax and reduce daily stress. Breathe deeply through your nose, hold it for several seconds, then breathe out slowly through your mouth. Feel free to repeat this process whenever needed throughout the day.

🥙Healthy nutrition! It is best to avoid heavy, greasy foods that can make you feel sluggish in the heat. Consuming fruits and vegetables with high water content is most suitable for mind and body wellness. Also, limit your daily intake of alcohol and caffeine, as both can contribute to dehydration.

Remember, it’s okay to be honest about the challenges you may face due to the summer heat. The VFPI is here for support, helping to improve and maintain your mental health during every season. Let’s take on this summer together with resilience and mindfulness. Stay cool, stay hydrated, and stay mentally fit.
