✨ FOR THE FIRST TIME IN VIETNAM: INTRAVASCULAR LITHOTRIPSY (IVL) TECHNOLOGY ULTRASOUND SHOCKWAVES USED TO TREAT ARTERIAL CALCIFICATION – A BREAKTHROUGH IN CARDIOVASCULAR INTERVENTIONS ✨

🏥 FV Hospital has successfully performed the first two coronary interventions in Vietnam using intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) – an advanced technique that breaks down calcified plaque in the arteries using ultrasound shockwaves. This breakthrough approach is particularly effective in treating severely calcified coronary lesions where traditional methods fall short.

🩺 Both patients had severely calcified coronary arteries, making conventional treatments such as balloon angioplasty or diamond-tip drilling (RotaPro) less effective. FV’s cardiologists employed the IVL technique, in which a special balloon catheter delivers ultrasound shockwaves to safely fracture the calcium deposits. This allows for optimal stent placement, restores blood flow to the heart, and relieves symptoms immediately after the procedure.

👨‍⚕️ Ho Minh Tuan, MD, PhD - Head of Cardiology & Interventional Cardiology Department at FV Hospital stated that IVL technology enhances patient safety and reduces complications, especially for elderly patients or those with multiple comorbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidaemia, and chronic kidney disease – as seen in the first two cases.

🔹On the afternoon of 5 July 2025, over 150 doctors and healthcare professionals attended FV Hospital’s CME Medical Workshop, titled “Multispecialty Approach in the Treatment of Bad Breath and Swallowing Disorders.” The event featured expert-led presentations from five departments - Dental & Maxillofacial Surgery, Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Gastroenterology, Nutrition, and Rehabilitation.

🔹More than a knowledge-sharing event, the workshop underscored FV Hospital’s pioneering role in advancing a multispecialty model for diagnosis and treatment, providing comprehensive solutions to conditions that are often underestimated but have a significant impact on patients’ quality of life.

⭐️ DOES SOY INCREASE THE RISK OF BREAST CANCER?

⭐️ Dr Phung Ngoc Thu, Specialist Level I - Senologist at FV Hospital, who has over 20 years of experience in diagnosing and treating thousands of breast disease cases, affirms: SOY DOES NOT INCREASE THE RISK OF BREAST CANCER!

On the contrary, soy is a rich source of plant-based protein and contains many nutrients that are beneficial for overall health.

• Soy contains phytoestrogens – plant-based compounds that can bind to oestrogen receptors in the breast. However, their activity is very weak and can even block the effects of stronger oestrogens (such as endogenous oestrogen or oestrogen from medication).

Waking up after a night’s sleep, a 9-year-old boy in Ho Chi Minh City suddenly became deaf in one ear. He was fortunate to be successfully treated at FV Hospital with an intratympanic injection.

💖 Here, Vo Cong Minh, MD PhD, Head of the ENT Department, diagnosed the boy with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss, which was almost profound deafness. To give him hope, Dr Minh decided to perform intratympanic injections.

Intratympanic injection is a technique that requires a high level of skill and patience especially when carried out on young children. After just a few treatment sessions, the boy’s hearing had almost completely returned to normal, leaving his family deeply moved.

✨ THE MIRACLE OF MEDICINE AND THE DREAMING HANDS OF A LITTLE BOY WHO LOVES FOLK SONGS

Duy Quang - A 9-year-old boy from Ha Tinh was born without radial bones and thumbs on both hands. He couldn’t dress himself, take care of personal hygiene, or hold a microphone to sing the folk songs he loved so much. Quang’s childhood has been filled with limitations and hardships that even adults would struggle to endure.

Yet, something miraculous happened when his family was brought to FV Hospital by The Children of Vietnam Charitable Fund - A place illuminated by compassion and the extraordinary skill of the “white coat angels.”

With the support of the Charitable Fund, Quang’s surgery was fully sponsored at no cost to his family. Even more remarkably, Dr Stéphane Guero - A world-leading specialist in hand surgery personally performed the treatment.

“Just 6 centimeters, but for him, it’s an entire world,” Dr Guero shared emotionally, referring to the special device now helping to lengthen Quang’s arm bone.

Because of the history of congenital heart disease, Quang’s operation was a major challenge. But the FV team coordinated seamlessly across multiple specialties: Anaesthesiology, Cardiology, Paediatrics, and Hand Surgery to ensure his safety. The first surgery performed on May 20th, was a resounding success!

🤲 After Quang’s right arm was lengthened by 6 centimeters, Dr Guero will proceed with two more operations:
1. Grafting bone into the lengthened area
2. Transferring the index finger to create a thumb so he can grasp objects like any other child

FV Hospital has been officially recognised as a designated primary healthcare facility under Social Health Insurance system. It marks a major step in FV’s efforts to reduce treatment costs and expand access to international healthcare standards for the community.

Social Health Insurance will cover 100% of eligible costs (within the scope defined by the Ministry of Health) for services provided at FV’s Accident & Emergency Department and all outpatient clinics.

🏥 Services Covered by Social Health Insurance at FV Hospital

📌 For outpatients:
• Patients who have registered FV Hospital as their primary healthcare facility under the Social Health Insurance system.
• Patients receiving emergency care, and gastrointestinal endoscopy procedres.
• Patients with a valid referral letter.
• Patients receiving outpatient consultations and treatment for conditions listed in the List of Conditions Eligible for Treatment at the Primary Level (Appendix 2 under Circular 01/2025/TT-BYT). This includes outpatient care at the Oncology Department, such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

📌 For inpatients (no referral letter required):
• Procedures performed in Cathlab.
• Knee, hip, and shoulder replacement surgeries in the Bone and Joint Centre.
• Phaco surgery and vitrectomy for retinal detachment in the Ophthalmology and Refractive Surgery Department.
