Researchers from New York’s Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center have been able to cure several patients of cancer by administering an immunotherapy drug called Dostarlimab.

New magic drug for cancer patients: Media propaganda Vs Reality

So, the “so called” magic image for cancer patients which have been in news for last couple of days. A new drug which can cure “100%” of cancer patients making a big news. More than few hundreds of queries to me as of now coming from patients, their relatives, friends and families about the magic drug!
Let me clear the confusion in simple words:

1. The drug is known as “Dostarlimab”, one of the new anti cancer medicines (similar drugs are available for many other cancers)

2. This drug was tried as an experiment on a small group of patients. Only 12 patients have completed the treatment as per requirement.

3. The patients were suffering from stage II and stage III ”RECTUM CANCER” (means, its effect on other cancers are not known as of now.

4. Even not all stage II and III re**um cancer patients are eligible for this. A specific mutation (MSI-H) has to be there for this medicine to be effective. Only 5-10% of patients show that mutation. Means it is not effective for rest 90-95% patients.

5. The data was presented after 12 months median follow up. Shortest and longest follow up was 6months and 25 months. That means no one knows what will happen after 5 years or more.

Inference: Of course this is a very promising drug. But it needs to be tested on more number of patients and the effects need to be followed for a longer period of time to know what will happen in future.

And, this is not a magic drug to eradicate all cancers from the world.

So, follow the standard treatment till the time we have more evidence to change the practice.

According to doctors, the patients, during the trial, took every three weeks for six months. The was locally advanced in the re**um but had not spread to other organs.

A medical trial at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York cured cancer without any surgery or chemotherapy, using a monoclonal antibody drug called Dostarlimab.

The dostarlimab was prescribed to the patients every three weeks for a period of 6months. The drug performance is specifically observed in patients who are in re**al cancer’s second and third stages.

For the first time in history, a new drug has been tested for colore**al cancer with a 100% success rate in clinical trials.
The study was done by doctors from the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. The results have been published in the New England Journal of Medicine.Tumor vanished in all 12 re**al cancer patients during a drug trial.
The study carried in a patients with a particular kind of re**al cancer called "mismatch repair deficient'
cancer". The trial was conducted for 6 months.The drug "Dostarlimab" is used.
It is an immunotherapy drug used in the treatment of endometrial canc
OIt is also known as "PD-1 blockade" drug and "checkpoint inhibitor".
It is also known by the brand name Jemparli It is sponsored by drug company GSK The cost of the drug (in trial phase) is
approximately Rs 8.55 lakh.
The patients tested also experienced no significant side effects during the course of their treatment. Although excited by the research, scientists have said the promising results will need to be repeated,
and cautioned against concluding that the cancer had been eradicated permanently.
This ongoing medical trial in the US is now seen as a new beginning in the re**al cancer space.
