Sleep, Exercise, and Avoiding Ci******es are Key to Reducing IBS Risk

Following healthy lifestyle habits is associated with a reduced risk of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), according to a new study. These habits included not smoking, vigorous physical activity, and getting enough quality sleep.

The findings were published February 20 in the journal Gut.

Researchers examined five key healthy behaviors, which include never smoking, getting at least 7 hours of quality sleep each night; a high level of vigorous physical activity each week; a high-quality balanced diet every day; and moderate alcohol intake.

They analyzed participants of an average age of 55 from the UK Biobank, which included 64,268 people, just over half of whom (55%) were women, and who had completed at least two 24-hour dietary recall questionnaires. The period of examination took place during a 12.6-year period, during which 961 (1.5%) cases of IBS were recorded.

Results showed 7,604 (12%) of participants didn’t engage in any of the 5 healthy lifestyle behaviors, while 20,662 (32%) reported one; 21,901 (34%) reported two; and 14,101 (22%) reported three to five behaviors at the start of the study.

According to the results of this study, individuals who adopt an increasing number of these healthy lifestyle behaviors could see a proportional decrease in their IBS risk, with adherence to one, two, or three to five behaviors associated with reductions of 21%, 36%, and 42% in IBS risk, respectively.

Furthermore, three healthy behaviors were independently linked with a lower risk of IBS: never smoking (14% lower); high level of physical activity (17% lower); and a good night’s sleep (27% lower).

FDA says chemicals in pizza boxes and popcorn bags no longer used in food packaging

Chemicals once commonly found in a range of products, including pizza boxes and microwave popcorn bags, are no longer being used in food packaging in the United States, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.

Eliminating the grease-proofing substances ends a yearslong campaign by the agency to phase out per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, toxic chemicals that may be linked to serious health problems, including cancer, birth defects and immune system suppression.

PFAS create a barrier that prevents oils, greases and water from seeping through food packaging, keeping the food dry and fresh.

They were once unavoidable in people’s day-to-day lives, being used in everything from fast-food wrappers to pet food bags.

Following extensive research over the last decade that found the chemicals can leach into food and may be associated with serious health problems in humans, food manufacturers gradually began to phase them out. In 2020, the FDA said it received commitments from the remaining food manufacturers to remove PFAS from their products voluntarily over the next few years.

“The completion of the voluntary market phase-out of these substances used on food packaging paper and paperboard, eliminates the primary source of dietary exposure to PFAS from authorized food contact uses,” the FDA said in the release Wednesday.

Cruise ship barred from docking in Mauritius amid outbreak of stomach illness

Officials in the island nation of Mauritius blocked a Norwegian Cruise Line ship from docking there Sunday after more than a dozen passengers were stricken with a stomach illness.

Around 15 passengers aboard the Norwegian Dawn remain in isolation because of an undisclosed "health risk" and are undergoing testing, according to the Mauritius Ports Authority.

"The decision not to allow the cruise ship access to the quay was taken in order to avoid any health risks," the authority said in a statement.

The sick guests “experienced mild symptoms of a stomach-related illness,” Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement Sunday. The cause of the outbreak has not been released.

“Due to additional testing being required by local authorities before being allowed entry, the government of Mauritius has delayed disembarkation for the current cruise and embarkation for the next cruise by two days,” the Norwegian statement said.

It’s expected that the ship will be allowed to dock Tuesday, the cruise line said, after results of tests conducted Sunday become available.

Boiling Water May Help Remove Up to 90% of Microplastics

Boiling and filtering your tap water may dramatically lower the amount of microplastics you drink, according to new research.

Recent studies have found that nano- and microplastics (NMPs), which are bits of plastic as tiny as one-thousandth of a millimeter in diameter, have been found in a host of products and even in tap water.

A new study, published February 28 in Environmental Science & Technology Letters, found that boiling mineral-rich water for just five minutes can reduce the amount of NMP you’re exposed to by up to 90%.

Scientists are just beginning to understand the health risks associated with microplastic exposureTrusted Source, but growing evidenceTrusted Source suggests the plastics can accumulate in the body and trigger oxidative stress, inflammation, insulin resistance, and liver issues.

Certain advanced water filtration systems can capture and help remove some NMPs from tap water. But researchers wanted to figure out other options to remove microplastics, especially since in poorer countries cheaper, more accessible solutions for clean water are needed.

Boiling water may be a safe, simple solution that can effectively decontaminate household tap water, the new findings suggest.

“Boiling water before drinking is a great example of an ancient cultural practice that can help reduce an environmental exposure,” Dr. Luz Claudio, PhD, a professor of environmental medicine and public health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, told Healthline.

Measles is a 'heat-seeking missile' experts warn as Florida outbreak grows

The Florida measles outbreak is expanding. As of Monday, health officials in Broward County confirmed an eighth case of the virus, including one in a child under age 5.

It’s unknown what connection the youngest measles patient has to Manatee Bay Elementary School in Weston, near Fort Lauderdale, where most of the cases have been identified. The spread beyond school-age kids was expected.

Cases are “not going to stay contained just to that one school, not when a virus is this infectious,” said Dr. David Kimberlin, co-director of the division of pediatric infectious diseases at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that as of Friday there have been at least 35 measles cases in 15 states in 2024 — most related to international travel. In January, there were nine measles cases in Pennsylvania, eight of them in Philadelphia. (If there are no more cases reported there as of early next week, the Philadelphia outbreak will be declared over.) Late Friday, Michigan’s health department announced that it, too, had identified a measles case — its first since 2019.

This ALS patient has a brain implant that translates his thoughts to computer commands

Staring at a computer screen, Mark focuses deeply, his arms resting by his side. His right index finger trembles ever so slightly on top of a pillow, and then an alert rings out from the screen in front of him, a message to a caregiver that he needs assistance.

Without ever clicking a mouse or touching a screen, Mark selected this command on his computer simply using signals from his brain. Mark, whom CNN agreed to identify using only his first name for privacy reasons, has an implant inside his brain that is translating his neural activity to commands on a computer.

Mark is only the 10th person in the world implanted with this particular type of brain-computer interface, or BCI. He’s participating in a human trial with a company called Synchron and underwent the procedure in August, after being diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – sometimes called ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease – in 2021.

The hope is that the technology in Mark’s brain could assist him and others like him who are losing their motor function. “It’s an opportunity for a piece of technology to help someone that will not be able to help themselves otherwise,” Mark told CNN.

She Took Compounded Ozempic to Lose 10 Pounds and Ended Up in the ER with Appendicitis

A year before her wedding, Amy Jenson was determined to lose 10 to 15 pounds to reach her target weight of 126 pounds and fit perfectly into her dress.

For 8 months, she tried the ketogenic diet, which had worked for her in the past.

“I wasn’t having success, and my naturopathic doctor — because I also was on the verge of being pre-diabetic — suggested semaglutide,” Jenson told Healthline.

Semaglutide is better known by the brand names Ozempic and Wegovy.

She got semaglutide + B12 from a compounding pharmacy and started at a low dose with slow increases each month.

“I got some side effects — two stomach issues over four months…that came and went [with] severe stomachache and lasted 8 hours,” said Jenson. “I felt full all the time, was constipated, and taking magnesium at night to have bowel movements.”

After three months on the medication, she lost 10 pounds and reached her goal weight. However, she kept taking it for another month until the week before her wedding for fear of gaining the weight backTrusted Source.

“The day after my wedding, I woke up at 3 a.m. with a really bad stomachache, sick out of both ends,” said Jenson.

Her wedding was out of the country, and she planned to fly back to the United States the next day.

Newly approved drug protects against multiple food allergies, giving an 'extra layer of comfort'

Kevin Wang and Annie Marqueling’s son Liam was 8 months old when he broke out in hives all over his body after eating a few bits of a scrambled egg. An allergy test revealed Liam was allergic to eggs, as well as peanuts and tree nuts, and for the next year, the entire family avoided foods that could trigger a dangerous reaction.

“We had to pay special attention to every single item that we brought to the house because it could potentially be a life-threatening allergen for him,” Wang said. “There’s multiple times where we’ve had to reach out and take a cookie before he takes a bite because we were unsure of the contents.”

Then, two years ago, Wang and Marqueling, who live in Palo Alto, California, found out about a clinical trial for a decades-old drug called omalizumab. The injectable drug was approved in 2003 under the name Xolair for allergic asthma and later expanded to include chronic hives, but now there was evidence it could also protect against severe allergic reactions to food.

In Alabama, patients are praying for a change of heart on access to IVF

After two years of trying to have a baby, Paula Jean Hardin and her husband, Wes, were finally on their way to starting in vitro fertilization, a path to growing their family that Hardin believed was part of a plan from God.

But a new state Supreme Court decision, which rested partly on beliefs Hardin said she shares, has suddenly led some fertility clinics in Alabama to pause their services, putting her dreams – and those of many other families in Alabama – on hold.

The court’s February 16 decision, which declared that frozen embryos are children under the state’s Wrongful Death of a Minor Act, rested in part on the belief that “life begins at fertilization,” Justice Jay Mitchell wrote in the majority opinion. In a concurring opinion, Chief Justice Tom Parker wrote that “human life cannot be wrongfully destroyed without incurring the wrath of a holy God” and quoted from the Bible.

Hardin, a 36-year-old pre-K teacher in Tuscaloosa, said the belief that life begins at conception is an important part of her faith as well, but she emphasized that she didn’t believe it was inconsistent with IVF.

Norovirus spreading in the Northeast, CDC data shows

Over the last month, norovirus has been circulating in the Northeast at the highest rates since April of last year.

The region has been seeing over 13% of norovirus tests come back positive, on average, since late January, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s a higher share than in any other part of the U.S. right now, but lower than the region’s rate at this time last year.

Norovirus is somewhat seasonal — cases occur most frequently in cold months (late fall, winter and early spring). Nationally, norovirus positivity rates have been hovering between 10% and 12.5% since early January. By comparison, last year’s peak rates exceeded 16% in mid-March.

More Young People Are Being Prescribed Antidepressants, Here’s Why?

Antidepressant use among young people has escalated in recent years, even before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since March 2020, the dispensing rate of antidepressants among young adults and adolescents increased significantly, according to a new study.

The findings were published February 26 in the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Researchers examined antidepressant prescriptions for young individuals in the United States ages 12–25 from 2016 to 2022, during which time the monthly antidepressant dispensing rate increased by 66.3%.

This rate rose 129.6% and 56.5% faster after March 2020 for female teens ages 12–17 and 18–25. Conversely, there was a decline among male teens and young adults in the same age groups.
