How many conversations have we missed that could have saved a life?

In Vietnam, su***de remains one of the leading causes of death among young people, yet so many of these tragedies are preventable when someone nearby knows how to recognize and respond to the signs of su***de. According to the World Health Organization, for every person who dies by su***de, as many as 20 others may have made an attempt.

Behind each statistic lies a story — a friend, a student, a colleague, a child, whose pain might have been eased if someone had seen the signs and knew what to do. 💔

That’s why VBridge and Sandy Sinn M.Ed, at Center For Positive Psychology & Wellbeing by Sandy Sinn (CPPWB), are joining forces to co-organize the LivingWorks Australia safeTALK workshop: a half-day, internationally recognized and evidence based su***de alertness training that equips participants with the tools to identify signs of suicidal thoughts and connect those in need with life-saving support. 🛟

Why is this important for our community?

Because su***de prevention is not just the work of doctors or counselors. It takes all of us!

Whether you are a healthcare worker, an NGO frontline worker, a classroom teacher, a parent, a faith leader, or a university student, you can be the bridge to hope and safety. 🤝

Vital statistics:

1️⃣ In communities with trained su***de alertness "community helpers," su***de rates have dropped by up to 25%. 📉
2️⃣ Community su***de prevention programs, including safeTALK, have reduced su***de attempts and deaths by as much as 40% over time. 📊
3️⃣ safeTALK builds skills and confidence to recognize signs, engage in life-saving conversations, and connect people to help. 🧠💬

Imagine a Vietnam where everyone looks out for one another, where every helping hand knows how to act, and nobody faces suicidal thoughts alone.

This is the vision behind the workshop and creating su***de-safer communities.🌏💙

If you have ever asked yourself, “What can I do to help?”— this is where it starts.

Today is World Su***de Prevention Day—a stark reminder that su***de doesn’t discriminate. It crosses cultures, borders, and every personal boundary we imagine.

Chris Grant lives in Scotland. I live in Hong Kong. He comes from a Scottish culture; I come from a Chinese one. Thousands of miles and oceans separate us, yet we found connection in a shared mission: to bring su***de first aid skills to our communities, because every life matters, no matter where it’s lived.

Earlier this year, we met on LinkedIn—two LivingWorks ASIST trainers from very different worlds bound by the same urgent purpose.

How could two people so far apart culturally and geographically create meaningful change?

By coming together with empathy, respect, and the belief that our differences strengthen, not divide, our efforts.

Over the past few months, Chris and I have worked side-by-side, combining our experiences and perspectives to craft a LivingWorks ASIST workshop tailored for Hong Kong—blending culture, skill, and heart to empower everyday people to recognize risk, open lifesaving conversations, and create safety plans.

So on this World Su***de Prevention Day, we proudly announce our first co-led ASIST workshop in Hong Kong on November 21-22, 2025.

We invite parents, teachers, friends, neighbors—everyone—to join us. Sign up now: https://www.sandysinn.com/

Su***de crosses all boundaries, but so can we, together building a community safer for all.

Su***de is preventable. Together, across cultures and continents, we can be the difference.

Breaking Ground with Compassion: SJCCS & SITS Bring Life-Saving safeTALK Training to HKU Master’s Students 🎓❤️

Did you know that su***de is one of the leading causes of death among university students globally, and Hong Kong is no exception? Every statistic represents real lives, real struggles, and real potential that we have the power to protect and nurture.

In support of World Su***de Prevention Month, St. John’s Cathedral Counseling Services (SJCCS) and Su***de Intervention Training by Sandy Sinn (SITS) are building a network of safety for campuses across Hong Kong.

As part of this commitment, on September 13, 2025, we will co-organize the LivingWorks safeTALK su***de alertness workshop for the Master’s of Social Work students at The University of Hong Kong (HKU).

We are proud to be the first to bring this vital training to university students in Hong Kong, paving the way for safer, more caring campus communities.

Why is this so important?

University life can be overwhelming, and mental health challenges often go unnoticed or unspoken. Who better to respond with empathy and understanding than social workers—trained not just academically but equipped to recognize warning signs and intervene with hope and life-saving skills?

Through this workshop, we aim to empower these future mental health champions to act confidently, fostering a web of care around their peers.

We are deeply grateful to Dr. Amy Cheung for her belief in the importance of nurturing mental health among university students. Her support has been crucial in making this pioneering initiative possible, reflecting a shared vision of a compassionate and resilient future generation. 🙏🌟

As these Master’s students prepare to take this step, we ask: How might changing one conversation, offering one helping hand, create ripples that save lives?

Are you going to join us in building this network of safety by bringing safeTALK to your campus?

Let’s walk this path of hope and action together. 💬✨

Thank you CECES 香港幼兒教育及服務聯會(幼聯)for inviting me to speak on how youth su***de prevention is everyone’s business.

The key messages are:

✋The statistics are horrifying: 1 in 20 people will contemplate su***de in their lifetime.

✋That’s at least ONE student per classroom.

✋Most likely at least one per office.

✋And at least one in your friendship group or extended family.

Let that sink in. These are not just statistic, each number represents a young precious life.

That number rises by a factor of 14 for those who are neuro-diverse.

Su***de remains the biggest killer of the elderly, and of middle-aged men.

😱Most shocking of all, it’s the second biggest killer of children. Truly heartbreaking 💔 😨

If you think youth suicude prevention is not your responsibility, think again.

🌟 Reflecting on a Transformative Day at the Church Mental Health Summit 2024🌟

As I look back on my experience at this year’s Church Mental Health Summit, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude, particularly to Christina Tang, the founder of Restore, who graciously invited me to speak. Your vision and dedication to mental health within our church communities are truly inspiring, Christina. Thank you for trusting me with this opportunity to share and engage in such an important conversation.

Speaking to the diverse church communities across Hong Kong about how we can collectively build a su***de-safer environment is not just a professional engagement for me; it is a deeply personal mission.

As a su***de intervention trainer and mental health educator, in every public speaking opportunity, my aim is to ignite change and inspire action.

The summit was a significant breakthrough—a moment where we began to change the narrative and start the conversations we so desperately need.

Reflecting on our time together, several key thoughts resonate deeply:

👉Unity in Purpose: It was heartwarming to see so many churches gather with a shared vision. Together, we can create a supportive community that fosters understanding and compassion.

👉Normalizing the Conversation: By discussing su***de openly, we are taking crucial steps to dismantle stigma. Each dialogue we engage in brings us closer to healing. How can we continue this vital conversation in our communities?

👉Empowerment through Knowledge: I emphasized that you don’t need to be a trained professional to make a difference. Each of us has the power to reach out and support someone who may be struggling.

What resources can we provide to ensure everyone feels equipped to intervene?

As we move forward, I am filled with hope about the direction we are heading. We are beginning to change the narrative around mental health within our churches, and that’s a powerful testament to our collective commitment.

“One life lost is one too many”

Su***de prevention is a shared responsibility, and together, we can create a culture of support and understanding.

What will you do to continue this conversation in your community?

Let’s embrace this opportunity for change and work together to safeguard those around us.

Thank you once again, Christina, for your unwavering dedication and for including me in this crucial dialogue.

Together, we can make a lasting impact.

🌍✨ On World Mental Health Day 2024, I’m reminded that our commitment to mental health can’t be confined to just one day—it must be a priority we uphold all year round. As a youth mental health educator and LivingWorks ASIST Trainer, I dedicate my work to equipping people who work with young people with the tools they need to help them navigate their mental health challenges while also supporting their families and communities in understanding these issues.

This week, I took the opportunity to deepen my knowledge of youth su***de safety. Why is continuous learning so crucial in this field? Because every piece of evidence-based knowledge enhances my ability to serve my community effectively. I am driven by the belief that breaking the stigma surrounding mental health is essential and that one life lost is one too many.

As a mother, I not only witness the unique challenges faced by Gen Z but also feel a personal responsibility to advocate for their mental well-being. My dual role as an educator and a mom fuels my commitment to continuous learning and upskilling. I strive to stay informed about the latest strategies and interventions, ensuring I can provide the best support possible.

So, How can we create environments—both at work and in our communities—that support mental health and encourage ongoing conversations and proactive measures? Let’s commit to making mental health a year-round priority for ourselves, our children, and future generations. Together, we can make a lasting impact. 💚

It’s okay to be not okay

I am the mother of Alex, Claire and Xavier. I am a Mental Health & Wellness Coach.

Born and raised in a traditional Chinese family in Hong Kong, expressing one’s emotion wasn’t something that I was taught to do or given permission to do. It was only when I went to boarding school in the U.K. and then went on to university in the States that I realized mental health is just as important if not more than physical health.

Mental Health and Wellness are to have the ability to recognize one’s emotion and able to express them in the right way. The alarming rise of youth falling into depression, anxiety and su***de in recent years should be enough for parents, teachers, schools and the community to take proactive actions toward educating, bringing awareness to the youth community.

Our children should NOT have to feel that they need permission to feel, they should NOT have to deal with mental illness on their own, they should NOT have to blame themselves for their emotions.
