Oxford University Clinical Research Unit - OUCRU OUCRU is a large-scale clinical and public health research organisation in Asia.

The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit with site offices in Viet Nam, Indonesia, and Nepal. Part of the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the University of Oxford (UK), OUCRU was first established in Ho Chi Minh City in 1991, hosted by the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD), Viet Nam. In 2003, OUCRU-NP was established in Kathmandu, Nepal, hosted by Patan Hospital and the Patan Academy of Health Sciences. OUCRU Hanoi was established in 2006 in partnership with the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases (NHTD), Viet Nam. In 2008, the Eijkman-Oxford Clinical Research Unit (EOCRU) was established in Jakarta, Indonesia, in partnership with the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology and Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia. Our vision is to have a local, regional and global impact on health by leading a locally-driven research programme on infectious diseases in Southeast Asia. Our research programme covers clinical and laboratory research with hospital and community-based patient populations, including epidemiology, immunology, host and pathogen genetics, molecular biology, microbiology and virology, mathematical modelling, bioinformatics, and biostatistics. This work is supported by an extensive clinical trials unit and data management centre compliant with national and international regulations and comprehensive management, finance, and administrative support offices. OUCRU receives considerable support from Wellcome Trust as part of the Africa and Asia Programmes. Together with our partners, we have led a highly successful effort in enhancing the infrastructure and capacity to perform clinical trials and basic scientific research in Viet Nam, Indonesia, and Nepal.

According to Dr. Hung, director of Children’s Hospital 1, dengue clinicians in Vietnam benefit from a unique ‘next-door’ partnership between OUCRU and frontline hospitals- where cutting-edge research meets daily clinical practice, providing both advanced expertise and invaluable hands-on experience.
At the recent science workshop, organised by the Dengue research group, OUCRU and Hospital for Tropical Diseases and OUCRU, leading health professionals and researchers shared current ongoing dengue clinical research outputs and dengue research priorities.

OUCRU và Quỹ Dragon Capital hân hạnh công bố báo cáo tổng kết Chương trình Đào tạo Hồi sức Tích cực tại Việt Nam, được triển khai từ năm 2022 với sự hỗ trợ từ Quỹ Ứng phó COVID-19 của Dragon Capital.

Trong hơn ba năm, chương trình đã:
✅ Đào tạo hàng trăm bác sĩ và điều dưỡng trên toàn quốc về các kỹ năng quan trọng như thở máy, chăm sóc sốt xuất huyết và lọc máu liên tục.
✅ Cử nhân viên hồi sức tích cực Việt Nam sang Vương quốc Anh để tham gia đào tạo nâng cao tại Bệnh viện Guy’s và St Thomas’.
✅ Mời chuyên gia ICU quốc tế tới Việt Nam, trực tiếp tập huấn cho hơn 600 cán bộ y tế thông qua các khóa học tại chỗ và trực tuyến kết hợp.
✅ Đồng tổ chức Hội nghị Thái Bình Dương lần thứ 8 về Vận động sớm và Phục hồi chức năng tại ICU tại TP. Hồ Chí Minh.
✅ Hỗ trợ các bác sĩ và điều dưỡng Việt Nam báo cáo nghiên cứu tại các hội nghị quốc tế, góp phần thúc đẩy trao đổi học thuật toàn cầu.

Sáng kiến này thể hiện sức mạnh của sự hợp tác giữa khoa học – y tế – khu vực tư nhân, cùng chung tay xây dựng năng lực bền vững và khả năng ứng phó với những thách thức y tế trong tương lai.

OUCRU and Dragon Capital are proud to share the final report of our Intensive Care Training Programme for Life-Threatening Infectious Diseases in Vietnam, launched in 2022 with support from Dragon Capital’s COVID-19 Response Fund.

Over two years, the programme:
✅ Trained hundreds of doctors and nurses nationwide on critical skills such as mechanical ventilation, dengue care, and renal replacement therapy.
✅ Sent Vietnamese ICU staff to the UK for advanced training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital.
✅ Brought international ICU experts to Vietnam, reaching over 600 healthcare professionals through on-site and hybrid training.
✅ Hosted the 8th Pacific Conference on Early Mobilization and Rehabilitation in the ICU in Ho Chi Minh City.
✅ Supported Vietnamese clinicians to present their research at international conferences, strengthening global exchange.

This initiative reflects the power of science–healthcare–private sector collaboration in building sustainable capacity and preparedness for future health challenges.

OUCRU researchers have had a leading role in developing the world’s first international clinical practice guideline for tuberculous meningitis (TBM), published this week in The Lancet Infectious Diseases. 📰

Tuberculous meningitis is the most severe form of tuberculosis and one of the most devastating neurological infections worldwide. Until now, there has been no unified global guideline to support health-care workers in managing this deadly disease. ⚕️

With long-standing support from Wellcome, OUCRU has built years of pioneering research and clinical trials in Vietnam and beyond—providing the foundation for many of the recommendations in this new guideline. Developed by the Tuberculous Meningitis International Research Consortium, the work reflects a truly global effort, bringing together experts from India, Indonesia, South Africa, Uganda, Vietnam, Australia, the Netherlands, the UK, and the USA. 🌍🤝

This milestone demonstrates OUCRU’s commitment to advancing global health through locally driven research with international impact—bridging science, collaboration, and care to improve outcomes for patients worldwide. ✨

Lao màng não là thể lao nguy hiểm. Dù được điều trị, bệnh vẫn có tỷ lệ tử vong cao từ 20–50%, khoảng một nửa số bệnh nhân sống sót phải gánh chịu các di chứng thần kinh suốt đời.

Ứng dụng kỹ thuật giải trình tự RNA đơn bào tiên tiến (scRNA-seq), các nhà khoa học tại OUCRU đã xác định thành công các tế bào miễn dịch trong dịch não tủy có thể thúc đẩy phản ứng viêm. Kết quả mở ra tiềm năng cải thiện phương pháp điều trị nhắm trúng đích nhằm giảm tổn thương não do miễn dịch. Theo chúng tôi được biết, đây là nghiên cứu đầu tiên trên thế giới ứng dụng scRNA-seq để nghiên cứu mẫu CSF trên bệnh nhân lao màng não trưởng thành.

Đồng thời, nhóm nghiên cứu cũng đã xây dựng quy trình lấy mẫu và phân tích song song máu – dịch não tủy. Quy trình này đặt nền móng cho các nghiên cứu quy mô lớn hơn, nhằm khám phá cơ chế bệnh và phát triển các chiến lược điều trị mới, không chỉ cho lao màng não mà còn cho nhiều bệnh nhiễm trùng hệ thần kinh trung ương khác.

Tiến sĩ Trịnh Thị Bích Trâm, tác giả chính của nghiên cứu, chia sẻ: “Đây là một nghiên cứu thí điểm đầy thách thức, từ việc lấy mẫu dịch não tủy chất lượng cao với đủ tế bào miễn dịch sống, đến xử lý phân tích khối dữ liệu phức tạp. Hoàn thành nghiên cứu này là một bước tiến quan trọng cho nghiên cứu bệnh lao màng não tại Việt Nam, và tôi vô cùng tự hào về những kết quả nhóm nghiên cứu đã đạt được.”

Tuberculous meningitis (TBM) is the most severe and life-threatening form of tuberculosis. Even with treatment, it carries a high fatality rate of 20% to 50%, and half of survivors live with permanent neurological complications.

Using the advanced single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) technique, a team of OUCRU researchers has mapped key immune cells in cerebrospinal fluid that may be driving inflammation in TBM patients. This shows the potential to explore new targeted treatments to reduce immune-mediated brain injury. To our knowledge, this is the first time scRNA-seq has been applied to examine CSF in adult TBM patients in the world.

The team also established a clear workflow and analysis pipeline for paired CSF and blood samples. This lays the foundation for larger studies to explore disease mechanisms and develop new treatment strategies for TBM and other brain infections.

Dr Trịnh Thị Bích Trâm, first author, said: ‘This pilot was technically demanding, from the difficulty of obtaining fresh, high-quality CSF samples with enough viable immune cells to the complexity of new analytical approaches. Completing it is a major step forward for TB research in Vietnam, and I'm increadibly proud of my team and what we've achieved together.’

OUCRU cùng các đối tác đã chính thức khởi động dự án Kleb-CASAVA (Giám sát và Phát triển vắc-xin phòng ngừa nhiễm khuẩn Klebsiella pneumoniae mắc phải trong cộng đồng) bằng chuỗi sự kiện kéo dài hai ngày tại TP. Hồ Chí Minh.

🔹 Ngày 5/8 tại OUCRU: Buổi họp khởi động quy tụ các bệnh viện đối tác, viện nghiên cứu và cơ quan y tế để thảo luận kế hoạch dự án, chia sẻ thông tin từ các điểm nghiên cứu và tăng cường phối hợp triển khai.

🔹 Ngày 6/8 tại Trường Đại học Khoa học Tự nhiên - TPHCM: Hội thảo khoa học với chủ đề “Phát triển vắc-xin chống vi khuẩn kháng thuốc” có sự tham gia của nhiều chuyên gia trong và ngoài nước, nhấn mạnh nhu cầu cấp thiết về vắc-xin phòng ngừa Klebsiella pneumoniae tại Việt Nam.

Dự án Kleb-CASAVA sẽ góp phần tăng cường giám sát cộng đồng, thúc đẩy nghiên cứu vắc-xin và hỗ trợ nỗ lực của Việt Nam trong ứng phó với tình trạng kháng kháng sinh.

OUCRU and partners have officially launched the Kleb-CASAVA project (Klebsiella pneumoniae Community-Acquired Infections Surveillance And Vaccine Development) with a two-day kick-off in Ho Chi Minh City.

🔹 Day 1 at OUCRU (5 Aug): The kick-off meeting gathered partner hospitals, research institutes, and public health agencies to discuss project plans, site presentations, and research coordination.

🔹 Day 2 at VNUHCM–University of Science (6 Aug): A public symposium on “Vaccine Development Against Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria” featured talks by national and international experts, highlighting the urgent need for a Klebsiella pneumoniae vaccine in Viet Nam.

The Kleb-CASAVA project will strengthen community surveillance, advance vaccine research, and contribute to Viet Nam’s efforts against antimicrobial resistance.

Louise Thwaites đã góp phần thay đổi đáng kể việc chăm sóc bệnh nhân hồi sức cấp cứu ở các quốc gia có nguồn lực hạn chế. Từ các thử nghiệm lâm sàng đến sáng lập VITAL, dự án đổi mới công cụ chẩn đoán lâm sàng chi phí thấp. Hiện, GS Thwaites đang là chủ dự án nghiên cứu sử dụng trí tuệ nhân tạo nhằm nâng cao nghiên cứu và điều trị bệnh viêm phổi.

Nghiên cứu của GS Timothy Walker kết hợp dữ liệu di truyền, dược học và y tế công cộng nhằm hiểu rõ hơn về bệnh lao kháng thuốc, từ đó phát triển các giải pháp chẩn đoán và điều trị chính xác hơn, duy trì hiệu quả của các nỗ lực kiểm soát bệnh lao trên toàn cầu.

We’re proud to share that three senior OUCRU researchers have been conferred the title of Full Professor by the University of Oxford, a remarkable milestone reflecting their leadership and contributions to global health.

‣ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗮𝗻 𝗟𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗻, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀, Head of OUCRU Emerging Infections research group in Vietnam. He has worked at the frontline of many emerging , including COVID-19, mpox, H5N1, and Hand Foot and Mouth Disease. Professor Tấn is also known for his work on equipping researchers and institutions across Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, with the sustainable capacities to respond to on-going and future Emerging Infectious Disease threats.

‣ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗟𝗼𝘂𝗶𝘀𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝘄𝗮𝗶𝘁𝗲𝘀, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗲, Senior Clinical Research Fellow at OUCRU Vietnam. Her work has transformed care in resource-limited settings, from practice defining clinical trials to launching , an innovation hub for low-cost diagnostic tools. She now leads a Wellcome Trust-funded project to advance pneumonia research and care.

‣ 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗧𝗶𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸𝗲𝗿, 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀, Clinical Research Fellow in OUCRU’s (TB) research group. His work integrates genomics, pharmacology, and public health to tackle drug-resistant TB and sustain the global effectiveness of TB control efforts.

Today is World Hepatitis Day.

Viet Nam has the fifth highest liver cancer incidence and death rate in the world and approximately 8 million people have hepatitis B, C or both. In 2018, Vietnam changed the insurance regulations related to Hepatitis C treatment that support to cover part of testing and treatment costs.

However, there are several barriers that affect access to hepatitis C testing, diagnosis, and treatment. At the recent dialogue session organised by OUCRU, community members specified these systematic and objective challenges.

About OUCRU

Our ten-year vision is to have local, regional and global impact on health by leading a locally driven research programme on infectious diseases in Southeast Asia.

The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit with campuses in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Viet Nam. We are hosted by the Hospital of Tropical Diseases (HTD) in Ho Chi Minh City, and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (NHTD) in Hanoi. As a Wellcome Trust Programme, we have received considerable support from the Wellcome Trust since our establishment in 1991.

Our work covers clinical and public health research and includes work in immunology, host and pathogen genetics, molecular biology, virology, mathematical modelling, bioinformatics, biostatistics and epidemiology. This work is all supported by an extensive clinical trials unit and data management centre compliant with national and international regulations. We also have comprehensive management, finance and administrative support which helps to ensure our regulatory compliance and good financial grants management practices.
