OUCRU is a large-scale clinical and public health research organisation in Asia.

The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit with site offices in Viet Nam, Indonesia, and Nepal. Part of the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the University of Oxford (UK), OUCRU was first established in Ho Chi Minh City in 1991, hosted by the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD), Viet Nam. In 2003, OUCRU-NP was established in Kathmandu, Nepal, hosted by Patan Hospital and the Patan Academy of Health Sciences. OUCRU Hanoi was established in 2006 in partnership with the National Hospital of Tropical Diseases (NHTD), Viet Nam. In 2008, the Eijkman-Oxford Clinical Research Unit (EOCRU) was established in Jakarta, Indonesia, in partnership with the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology and Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia. Our vision is to have a local, regional and global impact on health by leading a locally-driven research programme on infectious diseases in Southeast Asia. Our research programme covers clinical and laboratory research with hospital and community-based patient populations, including epidemiology, immunology, host and pathogen genetics, molecular biology, microbiology and virology, mathematical modelling, bioinformatics, and biostatistics. This work is supported by an extensive clinical trials unit and data management centre compliant with national and international regulations and comprehensive management, finance, and administrative support offices. OUCRU receives considerable support from Wellcome Trust as part of the Africa and Asia Programmes. Together with our partners, we have led a highly successful effort in enhancing the infrastructure and capacity to perform clinical trials and basic scientific research in Viet Nam, Indonesia, and Nepal.

🇻🇳 Nhân ngày Thầy thuốc Việt Nam 27/2, xin gửi lời chúc mừng và tri ân sâu sắc đến đội ngũ y bác sĩ, nhân viên y tế – những người đang ngày đêm chăm sóc và bảo vệ sức khỏe cộng đồng

Tại Đơn vị Nghiên cứu Lâm sàng Đại học Oxford (OUCRU), nơi khoa học gắn kết chặt chẽ với lâm sàng, có một đội ngũ đặc biệt: bác sĩ và điều dưỡng nghiên cứu. Dù không trực tiếp điều trị, họ đã và đang góp phần tìm lời giải cho những câu hỏi y học thực tiễn: Tại sao cùng một bệnh lý, có người hồi phục nhưng người khác lại không? Tại sao một phác đồ hiệu quả ở vùng này nhưng chưa thành công ở nơi khác? Có thể nói, nghiên cứu khoa học là một nhiệm vụ trọng tâm để không ngừng cải thiện và nâng cao hiệu quả điều trị cho người dân.

Trong suốt 35 năm qua, OUCRU đã cùng các đối tác nỗ lực nghiên cứu, nâng cao chất lượng chẩn đoán và điều trị các bệnh truyền nhiễm tại Việt Nam như sốt rét, sốt xuất huyết, lao... Kết quả này có được từ sự phối hợp chặt chẽ với Bệnh viện Bệnh Nhiệt đới TP.HCM, Bệnh viện Bệnh Nhiệt đới Trung ương cùng hệ thống y tế trên khắp cả nước.

On Vietnamese Doctors’ Day, we celebrate every person who shows up for patients: doctors, nurses, pharmacists, technicians, researchers, administrators, and all who keep our healthcare system running.

There is a particular kind of doctor who doesn’t just treat what’s in front of them – they want to know why. Why do some patients survive and another doesn’t? Why does a treatment work here but fail there? At OUCRU, our research doctors and nurses live inside that question.

They move between the ward and the lab, between a patient’s bedside and a dataset, between a clinical hunch and published findings that shape how doctors worldwide treat infectious diseases. It is one of medicine’s quieter, less celebrated paths – yet one of its most consequential.

Over the last three decades in Vietnam, this work – done in close partnership with the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Ho Chi Minh City, the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Hanoi, and our many partners across the country – has helped refine the diagnosis and treatment of malaria, tuberculosis, dengue, tetanus, and more.

Đằng sau mỗi dự án nghiên cứu thành công là những chuyên viên thầm lặng điều phối nguồn vốn, ngân sách và các mối quan hệ hợp tác. Dù giữ vai trò then chốt, đội ngũ nhân sự quản lý nghiên cứu tại Đông Nam Á hiện vẫn thiếu các chương trình đào tạo bài bản.

Tháng 2/2026, dự án đã kết nối 75 chuyên gia từ 9 quốc gia tham gia một trong những chương trình đào tạo chuyên sâu về quản lý nghiên cứu đầu tiên trong khu vực.

PGS.TS. Ngô Thị Hoa, chủ nhiệm dự án, nhấn mạnh: "Năng lực quản trị quan trọng không kém kỹ năng trong phòng thí nghiệm; đó là chìa khóa để đưa nghiên cứu vươn tầm."

Khi các đơn vị nghiên cứu trong nước đủ năng lực và tự tin làm chủ nguồn tài trợ, họ không chỉ dừng lại ở vai trò hỗ trợ mà sẽ vươn lên dẫn dắt, cùng các đối tác quốc tế quyết định hướng đi của nghiên cứu trên vị thế bình đẳng. Đây chính là tương lai mà EQUIPSEA đang nỗ lực xây dựng.

Behind every research breakthrough are people managing the grants, budgets, and partnerships that make the work possible. Yet across Southeast Asia, these professionals rarely receive formal training.

In February 2026, brought together 75 research management professionals from 9 countries for one of the region's first professional development programmes designed specifically for them.

"Regional scientific excellence depends as much on administrative stewardship as it does on laboratory skills," emphasised Assoc Prof Ngô Thị Hoa, who led the initiative.

When local institutions can manage funding confidently, they don't just support research; they lead it, shaping agendas and partnerships on equal footing. That's the future EQUIPSEA is building.

EQUIPSEA was funded by The British Academy and co-developed by the University of Oxford University of Glasgow, Universiti Putra Malaysia, and OUCRU Vietnam.

Giáo sư, Hiệp sĩ Nicholas John White, một trong những chuyên gia hàng đầu thế giới về bệnh truyền nhiễm, vừa qua đời.

Ông là nhân vật then chốt trong việc hình thành Đơn vị Nghiên cứu Lâm sàng Đại học Oxford (OUCRU) tại Việt Nam vào năm 1991. Phối hợp cùng các bệnh viện và đối tác địa phương, ông góp phần xây dựng cơ sở nghiên cứu sốt rét đặt tại Bệnh viện Bệnh Nhiệt đới, Tp.HCM. Đây là tiền đề quan trọng để OUCRU phát triển thành đơn vị nghiên cứu lâm sàng uy tín, với bốn cơ sở hoạt động trên khắp châu Á.

Các nghiên cứu của Giáo sư White đã góp phần định hình chính sách điều trị toàn cầu và cứu sống hàng triệu người. Trong bối cảnh kháng thuốc lan rộng, ông dẫn dắt nhóm nghiên cứu tạo ra bằng chứng lâm sàng cho việc áp dụng phương pháp điều trị phối hợp dựa trên artemisinin cho sốt rét do Plasmodium falciparum, cũng như artesunate truyền tĩnh mạch trong điều trị sốt rét ác tính. Những phác đồ này đã được sử dụng cho hơn một tỷ bệnh nhân trên toàn thế giới.

Với cộng đồng khoa học quốc tế, ông không chỉ là nhà nghiên cứu lỗi lạc mà còn là người thầy, người cộng sự tận tâm. Di sản của ông tiếp tục sống mãi qua những tiến bộ y học, hợp tác nghiên cứu, và nguồn cảm hứng lan tỏa đến nhiều thế hệ nhà khoa học.

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Sir Nicholas John White, one of the most respected figures in modern infectious disease research.

Nick was central to the establishment of OUCRU in Vietnam in 1991, working closely with local hospitals and partners to help build one of the country’s first malaria research labs. That early work laid the foundations for OUCRU to grow into the rigorous clinical research programme it is today, with four units across Asia.

Through his work on malaria, Nick helped shape global treatment policy and contributed to saving millions of lives. At a time of widespread drug resistance, he led a team to generate the clinical evidence that underpinned the adoption of artemisinin-based combination therapies for Plasmodium falciparum malaria, and intravenous artesunate for severe cases. These treatments have since been used in more than a billion patients worldwide.

To colleagues at OUCRU and across the globe, Nick was not only an outstanding scientist but also a mentor and trusted friend. His legacy lives on through the advances in care his work supported, the partnerships he helped build, and the many people he inspired.

OUCRU và Bệnh viện Bệnh Nhiệt đới đánh dấu 35 năm hợp tác

👏 Năm nay đánh dấu 35 năm kể từ khi OUCRU được thành lập tại Việt Nam (26/01/1991–26/01/2026) và 35 năm hợp tác với Bệnh viện Bệnh Nhiệt đới (HTD), TP. Hồ Chí Minh.

Trong những năm qua, OUCRU đã triển khai nghiên cứu chặt chẽ gắn với thực hành lâm sàng, phối hợp cùng HTD để tạo ra bằng chứng giúp cải thiện chăm sóc người bệnh và tăng cường năng lực sẵn sàng, ứng phó với các mối đe doạ bệnh truyền nhiễm.

Chúng tôi tự hào về những gì quan hệ hợp tác này đã tạo nên và sẽ tiếp tục theo đuổi khoa học hợp tác, chất lượng cao, hướng tới tác động thực tiễn.

OUCRU and the Hospital for Tropical Diseases mark 35 years of partnership.

👏 This year marks 35 years since OUCRU’s establishment in Vietnam (26/01/1991–26/01/2026) and 35 years of partnership with the Hospital for Tropical Diseases (HTD), Ho Chi Minh City.

In this time, OUCRU has embedded rigorous research into clinical settings, working with HTD to generate evidence that improves patient care and strengthens infectious disease preparedness and response.

We are proud of what this partnership has enabled, and we remain focused on delivering high-quality, collaborative science with real-world impact.

Congratulations to Professor Nicholas Day on being awarded a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for services to Global Health in the New Year Honours 2026.

Professor Day joined the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) in Vietnam in 1991 and worked first on the treatment of severe malaria, typhoid, tetanus and diphtheria. Since 2003 he has been Director of the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU), which conducts mainly infectious disease research aimed at improving health and well-being in low-resource communities.

Our ten-year vision is to have local, regional and global impact on health by leading a locally driven research programme on infectious diseases in Southeast Asia.

The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU) is a large-scale clinical and public health research unit with campuses in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Viet Nam. We are hosted by the Hospital of Tropical Diseases (HTD) in Ho Chi Minh City, and the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases (NHTD) in Hanoi. As a Wellcome Trust Programme, we have received considerable support from the Wellcome Trust since our establishment in 1991.

Our work covers clinical and public health research and includes work in immunology, host and pathogen genetics, molecular biology, virology, mathematical modelling, bioinformatics, biostatistics and epidemiology. This work is all supported by an extensive clinical trials unit and data management centre compliant with national and international regulations. We also have comprehensive management, finance and administrative support which helps to ensure our regulatory compliance and good financial grants management practices.
