Got new ink?

As long your tattoo is fully healed, you'll be good to schedule your next floaty retreat! We recommend you wait at least 3 weeks, or double-check with your tattoo artist to see what they'd recommend. Fresh wounds + a super salty pool of water are not a fun mix!

Have you ever stood up from your desk and found yourself feeling stiff and maybe even unable to stand up straight and tall? That's a clear signal from your body that you need to move more.

Get a little more wellness in your day by placing a note in your workstation to remind yourself to take a moment for a brief walk. Perhaps instead of sending an email to the person on the other side of the building, you go for a visit. Maybe instead of scheduling a sit-down meeting, you plan to discuss a topic while on the move. You don't have to go outside to reap the benefits of taking a walk! And love him or hate him, Apple's co-founder, Steve Jobs, was known for taking "walking meetings" for the some of the most important meetings of his life.

🌊🧘‍♀️ How often do you tell someone you're going to go "float" and they look at you like you have spinach in your teeth? 🤔

So what is floating, really? The scientific community refers to it as Floatation REST, or Reduced Environmental Stimulation Therapy (or REST) 🌌

The main principles of REST are:

🔇 Sensory Reduction: By reducing external sensory stimuli, such as visual, auditory, and tactile input, REST aims to limit the amount of sensory information that individuals receive. This can create a unique sensory environment that is often described as peaceful and calming. 🌈

⛩ Sensory Isolation: The float tank's design aims to minimize the perception of external sensory signals, creating a sense of isolation from the outside world. The reduced sensory input can lead to a state of deep relaxation and introspection. 🕊️

😌 Promoting Deep Relaxation: REST is believed to induce a state of profound relaxation by allowing individuals to disconnect from their everyday sensory experiences. It can facilitate relaxation responses, reduce muscle tension, lower stress levels, and promote a sense of mental and physical well-being. 🧘‍♂️💆‍♀️

Potential benefits associated with REST include:

💆‍♀️ Stress Reduction: REST has been reported to help reduce stress and anxiety levels, allowing individuals to experience a deep sense of relaxation and calmness. 🌊

🌟 Enhanced Well-being: The sensory isolation and relaxation achieved through REST can promote a positive mood, mental clarity, and overall well-being. 🌞

💪 Pain Management: Some individuals find that REST can help alleviate chronic pain conditions, such as fibromyalgia and musculoskeletal disorders, by reducing sensory input and promoting relaxation. 🌼

🧠 Mind-Body Connection: REST can provide an environment conducive to introspection and self-reflection, allowing individuals to explore their thoughts, emotions, and inner experiences. 🌌

P.S. How fitting is the acronym "REST"?? 😄💤

If you've never floated before, and even sometimes if you have, it can feel like time is moving soooooo slowly while you float. Or maybe it's just feeling impossible to get your brain to slow down. Those are the moments when we feel compelled to just get out.

But what if you stayed in? What if you sat with that antsy feeling a bit? What if you instead started to notice your breath? What if you scanned your body for tension or discomfort? What if you just became fully aware of your discomfort, almost like you were watching it on a TV show instead of living it?

You see, we are conditioned to go, go, go - to constantly do things and be productive. We rarely give our minds a break, even when we're passively watching television. How often do you reach for your phone when you have a moment between calls, shows, or conversations? We impulsively try to fill the void by doing something - ANYTHING.

The float is a great environment to practice slowing down, to observe our own tendencies to try to run from rest/nothingness. The next time you're floating and hear yourself thinking you should just get out, sit with it. Breathe. Just be. You never know what relief sits just on the other side of discomfort.

Floating -- not just for introverts!

If you're someone who feels like they just can't turn their brain off, or feels rejuvenated by busy social situations, you may wonder how you'd react to the decreased stimuli in the float tank.

At first it may be a little jarring, as you're so used to reaching for external stimuli, but as you float, you get a great opportunity to really go inward and become more sensitive to your inner reality. It can help file your thoughts away, so to speak, so they feel more manageable.

Over time, as your float practice grows and you develop an increased awareness, you may no longer feel the need to be constantly stimulated.
