'Just Breathe'

In many ways it really is that simple. The breathing techniques you learn during your hypnobirthing classes won't only serve you during labour but can also be used in those trying months and years ahead as a parent. When the kids won't stop fighting, I'm being nagged at about something I'm not prepared to give or if I've just asked for the thousandth time for them to put their shoes on (and they still haven't), I find a quiet corner and use these techniques to bring me back to calm instead of losing my temper. Disclaimer, I do still lose my temper sometimes, I'm only human.

Wether you have a planned or unplanned caesarean, hypnobirthing techniques can help you remain calm and and feel in control throughout.

Self-hypnosis (hypnobirthing techniques) have been proven to:
- Reduce anxiety
-Reduce blood pressure
- Lower heart rate
-Reduce blood loss
-Lower perceived levels of pain
-Lower the risk of complications during surgery
Anecdotally, it is also believed to improve recovery time after surgery.

Amazingly the jaw and the pelvis are physiologically connected and the relaxation of one deeply affects the other. This means when we clench our jaw, as we all do when we are in pain or stressed, this causes the muscles and tendons in the pelvic floor to tighten, not ideal when a baby is trying to make it way through!
During my classes you will learn all the easy tips and tricks you can do to help keep your body working as effectively as possible during labour to achieve a calm and controlled birth.

Affirmations, we do we use them in hypnobirthing?

When you sign up to one of my classes, you're given a set of birth affirmations to take away with you. During and after the classes, in the lead up to your birth, I encourage you to regularly read these affirmations to yourself. The idea is that regularly repeating them will start to cancel out the negative information your brain has absorbed about birth and replace it with positive thoughts and emotions. You are also provided with them in MP3 form so you can listen to them while you're practicing your breathing techniques and in a state of deep relaxation, making your subconscious mind more open to suggestion.

I really like this affirmation, particularly during labour ,as you can be speaking to yourself, or about your unborn baby that you'll soon be meeting!

There can be a lot to consider at this time so try and break it down into small chunks and try not to become overwhelmed by it all.
Antenatal classes can get booked up way in advance so it may seem early but it's always worth seeing what's out there and booking early, so you don't miss out on the one that feels right for you. I would recommend booking after you've had your 12 week scan and book for when you are about 30 weeks so you have plenty of time to absorb all the information and practice your hypnobirthing techniques!

Yep folks, it really is that simple!

I think the name can sometimes put people off, but all you're really doing is teaching your brain to relax so your body will follow. It really is just basic physiology, no mumbo jumbo, nothing hippy dippy and once you understand how the mind and body work together it really is just common sense.

There is a lot of preparation for the birth and first few days of parenthood but very little preparation for the journey of motherhood and the psychological and social changes that take place. The better prepared you are for these changes the easier it is to embrace them and adapt with them, instead of fighting against them or being left feeling confused and lost in your new role as a mother.

During my antenatal courses, we cover the concept of matrescence which is the emotional, social and hormonal journey a woman goes through as she transitions into a mother and how to navigate this new path you’re treading. My private postnatal care not only helps you to gain confidence in the practical aspects of parents, but helps guide you through some of these new, and sometimes unexpected, emotions and help you to recognise that all these feelings are a normal and healthy part of you evolving into a beautiful hybrid of the woman you were before and mother you are to become.
