Today we celebrate the women who lead, serve, and protect our communities.
At Vanuatu Emergency Services Association (VESA), women are not an afterthought.
They are ambulance officers, rescue leaders, communications officers, finance and administration professionals, volunteers, and mentors.
They work night shifts. They walk into traumatic scenes. They comfort families. They carry stretchers. They make hard clinical decisions. They lead teams.
And they do it with strength, intelligence, and compassion.
But let us also be honest with ourselves; in our society, women still face barriers. They are questioned more. They are interrupted more. They are underestimated more.
Sometimes the disrespect is loud. Sometimes it is quiet and daily.
At VESA, we will not accept that.
We believe that leadership has no gender. Courage has no gender. Clinical excellence has no gender. Respect is not optional.
As CEO, I am proud, not just today, but every day.
I am proud of the bravery of our female ambulance officers who step into uncertainty.
I am proud of the volunteers who train harder than anyone expects.
I am proud of the quiet resilience shown in our offices, call centre and in our ambulances.
I am proud of the next generation of girls watching and thinking, “I can do that.”
We are committed to safe workplaces, equal opportunity, fair promotion, zero tolerance for harassment, strong female leadership across our organisation, even at a Governance level.
This is not a “women’s issue.” This is a leadership issue. This is a community issue. This is a future-of-Vanuatu issue.
To every woman in VESA: We see you. We value you. We stand with you. We will continue to build a service, and a country, where your strength is recognised, respected, and celebrated.
Happy International Women’s Day!
