A Survivor’s Story – The Power of Early Detection
Almost all of us know someone who lost her battle to Breast Cancer or someone who survived. This is a story of a survivor, Rita Mclennan who is willing to share her story. She hopes to motivate all women out there to seek out information and take care of their reproductive health.
"One in eight women will have breast cancer. Do not keep it to yourself. Share it. Early detection saves lives and cost." Rita said
This October, we honour the strength and courage of survivors. Today, we share the story of a beloved family member whose journey reminds us why awareness and action matter.
Her breast cancer journey began with a discharge—no lump, no pain. Six months later, a lymph node appeared under her arm. Rita left her family in Vanuatu for treatement in Australia which lasted 1 year and 3 months. It was not easy. It was not funny. But she fought through it, supported by her family and friends.
Rita appeals to all “Every woman will experience theirs differently. Do not delay. Act quickly."
Thanks to regular checkups—every 3 months in 2023 and 2024, and now twice yearly in 2025—she is here to tell her story.
Rita reminds us that cancer does not discriminate, and now that we have access to mammograms and other diagnostic tools, checkups are not optional—they are essential.
This disease doesn’t just affect the person diagnosed. It impacts your children, your sisters, brothers, mum, dad, families and friends.
"Do not be selfish. Get checked."
Let’s stand together this PINKTOBER. Let’s talk about breast cancer. Let’s encourage early detection. Let’s save lives.
