The Ministry of Health is pleased to acknowledge the generous support of Mahidol University and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand following the official handover of a Bipolar Electrosurgical Unit (TURP system) at TTM Hospital on Monday, 13 April 2026.

This vital medical equipment, along with a comprehensive set of urological instruments and consumables, will significantly enhance Samoa’s capacity to provide specialized urological procedures locally particularly for the treatment of conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

The Honorable Associate Minister of Health - Afioga Motupuaa Henney Papalii expressed sincere gratitude for this meaningful contribution, noting that the support reflects the strong partnership, solidarity, and shared commitment between Samoa and Thailand in advancing health and well-being.

This donation will:
✔ Improve access to specialized services in-country
✔ Reduce the need for costly overseas referrals
✔ Strengthen patient safety and clinical outcomes
✔ Enhance the capacity of our surgical teams

Most importantly, it will improve the quality of care for our people, ensuring timely, effective, and dignified treatment closer to home.

The Ministry of Health extends its heartfelt appreciation to the Kingdom of Thailand and Mahidol University for their continued partnership, including ongoing training and professional exchanges that support the development of Samoa’s health workforce.

Satupaitea Goes Live — The Real Work Starts Now
With Satupaitea District Hospital now live on Tamanu EHR, Samoa has reached a key milestone - ALL rural health facilities are now connected.
But going live is the easy part. Using the system properly and consistently is critically important.
Because for Public Health, every patient record entered, every follow-up documented, every case tracked - allows us to:
• 📊 Monitor diabetes, hypertension, and other NCDs
• 👶 Ensure mothers and children are followed up properly
• 🔁 Maintain continuity of care across facilities
• 📍 Plan outreach and services based on real data
With the new Tamanu EHR now implemented across all rural facilities.
The foundation is in place — but its success depends on consistent, collective use.
The responsibility now sits with all of us — to embed it into everyday clinical practice, support one another, and ensure it is used as intended.
🌱 Looking Ahead
To all our doctors, nurses, and health staff — Fa’afetai Tele Lava for your commitment, your adaptability, and your willingness to embrace this change.
Your participation has brought us to this milestone.
Your continued effort will determine its success.
As we move forward, let us continue to support one another, build confidence in using the system, and strengthen how we deliver care — together.
🌿 One Patient. One Record. One Connected Health System.

Huge Thanks to our partners Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade , New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade,
Ministry of Health Samoa,
Ministry of Health - Manatū Hauora and especially to Beyond Essential Systems Project Manager Mr Tim C for the local onsite support.

World Health Day 2026, observed on 7 April, calls on people everywhere to stand with science. Under the theme “Together for health. Stand with science,” this year’s observance launches a year-long campaign celebrating the power of scientific collaboration to protect the health of people, animals, plants, and the planet. With a strong focus on the One Health approach, the campaign highlights both scientific achievements and the global cooperation needed to turn evidence into meaningful action.

Anchoring the 2026 campaign are two major global moments: the International One Health Summit (7 April), hosted by the Government of France under the French G7 Presidency, and the inaugural Global Forum of WHO Collaborating Centers (7–9 April), bringing together nearly 800 scientific institutions from over 80 countries. Together, these events represent one of the largest scientific networks ever convened around a United Nations agency, demonstrating how science-driven partnerships can build a healthier, safer future for all.

In Samoa, this global call is reflected through the ongoing efforts of the Ministry of Health, working closely with communities through the PEN Fa’asamoa Program and the School Health Strengthening Program. These initiatives are further strengthened by ongoing multi-media outreach, including programs such as the Health of the Nation Program, which help raise awareness, promote healthy lifestyles, and support the prevention and early detection of non-communicable diseases across the country.

The campaign invites everyone to take part, by celebrating scientific achievements, engaging with evidence, sharing stories of how science improves lives, and joining the global conversation using and .

🌿 Strengthening Primary Health Care Through Digital Health
Foailalo District Hospital Goes Live with Tamanu EHR
Foailalo District Hospital going live is more than just a system rollout —
it is a step toward a health system where:
Information follows the patient, not the other way around.
🌿 One Patient. One Record. One Connected Health System.

Primary Health Care is the first point of contact for most people — especially in our rural communities.
It is where:
• Children are immunised
• NCDs are detected and managed
• Mothers receive antenatal care
• Early signs of illness are identified
But for Primary Health Care to truly work — health information must be accurate, accessible, and connected.
💡 The Challenge We’ve Always Faced
Traditionally, patient information has been:
• Paper-based
• Stored at one facility
• Difficult to retrieve over time
This means:
• Patients repeat their history
• Follow-up is harder to track
• Clinical decisions rely on limited information
• Data for planning and prevention is delayed

🏥 Why Digitisation is important for Rural Facilities
Primary Health Care is strongest when rural facilities are empowered.
With EHR use at this level:
👉 Early detection improves
👉 Follow-up becomes consistent
👉 Referrals are smoother
👉 Communities receive more continuous and coordinated care
AND IMPORTANTLY — healthcare shifts from reactive treatment → proactive prevention

Ministry of Health Strengthens Communication Capacity through Behaviour Change Communication Workshop on Sexual and Reproductive Health.

The Ministry of Health successfully conducted a three-day Behaviour Change Communication (BCC) Workshop on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) from 25–27 March 2026, as part of its ongoing commitment to strengthening public health communication and improving health outcomes across Samoa.

This important initiative was delivered in partnership with Australia ABC International Development (ABCID), with support from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and the Government of Samoa.

The workshop aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and practical skills in designing and implementing effective communication strategies and tools that promote positive health behaviours. Key focus areas included:

- Sexual and reproductive health and rights
- Family planning awareness and services
- Prevention and response to gender-based violence

Participants were equipped with practical approaches to develop targeted, culturally appropriate communication products that support increased awareness, improved service uptake, and strengthened community engagement particularly among youth and vulnerable populations.

The training brought together a diverse group of stakeholders involved in SRH programming, including representatives from relevant Ministry of Health divisions, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations. This multi-sectoral approach reflects the importance of collaboration in addressing complex public health challenges and ensuring inclusive access to essential health services.

Through initiatives such as this, the Ministry of Health continues to prioritise the delivery of accessible, equitable, and high-quality sexual and reproductive health services for all Samoans.

The Ministry extends its sincere appreciation to ABC International Development, UNFPA, and all partners for their continued support and commitment to advancing health communication and community wellbeing in Samoa.

Together, we build a Healthy Samoa.
