Introduction
Vaginismus is poorly understood and relatively unknown among healthcare providers. It can cause distress, relationship problems, and also infertility. Many treatments have been tried including s*x therapy, education, hypnosis, and drug treatments.
Objective
The study aimed to present the effects of the sensate focus technique in treating vaginismus and the success rate in our clinic.
Methods
The treatment included a weekly session, each of 45 minutes duration, based on the components of the sensate focus technique to improve communication and fortify relationships, along with step-by-step learning of s*xual relations, counseling and education about the anatomical and psychological basis of vaginismus for both partners. The study includes 62 cases of vaginismus treated in the Specialized Clinic of Clinical Sexology- Libido in Pristina, Kosovo, during the period of, October 2019- March 2024.
Results
Sensate focus techniques usually include three sessions, but in our cases, we treated some patients longer. In 29% of cases, the problem was solved by 1-3 sessions, while 43% were in 3-5 sessions. Cases mainly with degrees 4 and 5 of vaginismus were treated in more than 5 sessions.
Conclusions
The sensate focus technique is the most appropriate method for solving problems with vaginismus. Taking into consideration the predisposing and maintenance factors, the information and advice given by this method make changes in beliefs and behaviors during s*xual activity.
