Statement on Recent Developments Affecting Non-Majority Communities in Kosovo

UNMIK is concerned about the closure of Serbia-run institutions in northern Kosovo, including the Pension and Disability Insurance Fund and the Republic Health Insurance Fund.

Additionally, many in non-majority communities, including Kosovo Serbs, continue to face challenges in obtaining Kosovo identification documents and valid residency permits, which may impede their ability to register their vehicles and receive license plates.

Actions in these matters, carried out without consultation or prior notice to the affected communities, negatively impact their daily lives and socioeconomic rights, hinder their integration & restrict access to healthcare and other essential services.

UNMIK reiterates its calls for all outstanding issues to be addressed constructively through the EU-facilitated Dialogue.

ℹ️ Did you know there are 721 villages in ?! This has given life to a multiethnic handicraft shop in the heart of Pristina, dedicated to showcasing the full range of talents of women from all of Kosovo’s communities.

Supported by UNMIK and spearheaded by Sanija Murati, founder of NGO Lady - CC 4 Women, the shop opened in Pristina’s old bazar neighbourhood in February.

“[The name] symbolizes full inclusion and diversity, celebrating the traditions and talents of women from every corner of Kosovo,” she explains.

For many artisans, this marks their first opportunity to reach beyond the confines of their villages. Farija Mehmeti, a Roma woman from the village of Lepi/Lepina, has been able to bring her embroidery to Pristina for the first time.

“This was a great opportunity…to gain exposure. We are forever grateful to Sanija and UNMIK for making this happen,” Farija said.

Join us in supporting local artisans and keeping traditions alive!

✨ Radical Togetherness through Photography ✨

Young photographers from different communities across Kosovo have come together to go back to the past – through the lens of analogue photography.

18 photography enthusiasts from across Kosovo have had their work showcased at the UNMIK-funded Barabar Centre, in an exhibition entitled “Radical Togetherness”, after a two-day training in the practice of ‘Lomography’ photography. Lomography, which originally used ‘Lomo cameras’ from the Soviet Union, focuses on spontaneity, imperfections, analog film and creativity.

Medical student Fjolla Aliu, 22, said she joined the project to learn more about photography, but she says the training was about more than the artistic practice and allowed participants to discuss topics that can be “challenging to discuss in everyday life”.

“We have all been told stories from our parents but it's very good to learn from our own stories.”

This journey, part of the Barabar Connect project, is implemented by Integra and with the support of the Swiss Embassy in Kosovo and .

On the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances, we stand in solidarity with the families of missing persons, honoring their courage and resilience.

Over 1,590 cases remain unresolved in Kosovo, leaving a deep wound in society.

UNMIK reaffirms its commitment to supporting efforts to clarify the fate of the missing persons and urges full implementation of the EU Declaration on Missing Persons and continued engagement through the ICRC-led Working Group.

UNMIK calls for a victim-centered, human rights-based approach to this vital issue of missing persons.
