With 19 years of experience working in the mental health field, I firmly believe that mental illness should never be used to justify mass murder. Mental health issues do not equal violence. I refuse to glorify a heinous and disturbed person's crimes, particularly when it pertains to innocent children, and to avoid giving them any additional notoriety.
Instead, I am dedicated to respecting the wishes of the grieving parents and families of the heartbreaking mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, who have courageously asked that their children's lives be honoured.
We hold close in our hearts the memories of the students: Abel Mwansa (12), Ezekiel Schofield (13), Kylie Smith (12), Zoey Benoit (12), and Ticaria Lampert (12). We also remember a dedicated educator, Shannda Aviugana-Durand (39).
Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the Tumbler Ridge community, the families and friends of the victims, and the surviving classmates enduring unimaginable pain, trauma and grief.
We also acknowledge the bravery of the heroic first responders, school staff, and healthcare professionals, who will carry the weight of this tragic day forever.
May everyone support one another as we process this senseless and horrific tragedy.
