Ignoring your food sensitivities might be why you’re max dosing the ibuprofen during your period. 😪

Food sensitivities cause inflammation in your gut and body by activating your immune system. Inflammation worsens period pain. Strong evidence suggests this also drives the development of conditions like endometriosis (PMID: 31476950, PMC3204940, PMC9265783).

But the good news is that managing food sensitivities is within our control.

If you want to reduce menstrual symptoms and just feel better overall — start paying attention to how your food affects you. Not just obvious gut issues, but also subtle symptoms in your body such as allergies, nasal congestion, itchy skin, general pains and headaches.

But often we become numb to the effects of food, so trying an elimination diet can also be helpful. This is how I discovered my own lactose and gluten intolerances which eventually lead to eliminating the cause of my period pain!

Reducing food sensitivities will reduce your overall inflammation. Your body and period will thank you! 🙏🏼

Let me know in the comments if you've had success reducing menstrual symptoms by eliminating food sensitivities.

Is your cycle often less than 25 days or longer than 35 days, or do you have periods that go AWOL every so often? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Irregular cycles are your body's way of telling you that something is up with your hormones.

It might be stress that is interfering with your ability to ovulate - from not eating enough, over exercising or other "healthy" stressors like fasting, low carb and even cold plunges.

The science behind most of these "healthy habits" are based on studies done on men.

We are not smaller men. Our hormones react more sensitively to stress as an evolutionary response (no baby making in times of danger)!

So if your body is already under stress from work, life, past trauma and everything else the world is throwing at us - adding more fuel to the fire is not going to benefit you!

Sugar and refined carbs (which turn into sugar) are also a stress on the body, plus high blood sugar impacts your hormones and ability to ovulate in other ways, particularly if you have PCOS.

Are you a hot girl with bloating / IBS? 🎈 Do you also have period problems? 🩸

The two are very much linked.

Gut health is super important for overall health and that includes hormone and menstrual health.

Poor gut health leads to problems with estrogen detoxification which can lead to heavy/painful periods, PMS and other menstrual cycle related unwanted symptoms.

So.. as they say - happy gut, happy hormones, happy life!

(Actually they don't say that I just made it up - but there's truth to it!)

But I once struggled with an extremely bloated belly and lots of gut issues.
I wrote a substack article about how I defeated my belly bloat - link is in bio if you're interested in reading. 👉🏽

Heavy periods are usually* due to high estrogen levels (compared with progesterone) - and this tends to be caused by either a lack of ovulation or poor quality ovulation.

But how heavy is too heavy? 🤔🩸🩸🩸

🩸 If you lose more than 80mls (around 16 regular pads/tampons) or bleed for more than 8 days per cycle.

🩸 If you have to double up on period protection or get up in the middle of the night to change otherwise you wake up in the morning to a scene from a horror movie.

🩸 If you experience flooding - bleeding through your pad or tampon every 30 to 60 minutes.

🩸 If after every bleed you are completely wiped out with low iron, exercise intolerance, fatigue and depression.

These are all signs of a heavy period.

Have you experience this? As someone who has experienced them, I'm curious - what is the most desperate method you've tried to prevent leakage (esp at night)?

If you're interested in personalised menstrual cycle or hormone health support, I have spaces open for one-to-one coaching. Send me a message to arrange a free discovery call. 📩

* Heavy periods can also be caused by the conditions Adenomyosis, Endometriosis, Uterine Fibroids or blood clotting disorders.

If you have coffee + a sweet pastry for breakfast and struggle with PMS and sugar cravings.. this one's for you! 👀

Coffee and carbs for breakfast spikes your blood sugar, giving you a temporary high (yes it feels good at the time), but sets you up for a blood sugar rollercoaster ride the rest of the day. 🎢

Unstable blood sugar results in those pesky sugar cravings, energy crashes, mood swings (hangry, anyone?) - which are all stressors on your body. This is especially true when you're premenstrual because you are more insulin resistant in this phase.

End result? Hormone imbalances, fatigue and period problems.

The fix? Start your day with 30g protein at breakfast. 💪🏼

PMS is one of the most common complaints I hear when I ask people to describe what they dislike about their menstrual cycle.

So here are some foundational things that I consider important when working with clients who suffer from PMS, and how I would begin to support them with nutrition and lifestyle practices.

How do you support yourself when premenstrual? Which of these do you find most helpful? 💖

If you struggle with period pain, you're not alone. It affects up to 90% of us. But just because it's common doesn't mean it's normal!

I used to have debilitating period pain for years! 😓 It wasn't until about 5 years ago that I finally experienced pain free periods - after I healed the inflammation in my body (mainly by eliminating gluten).

I hadn't realised I was sensitive to gluten because I didn't have any noticeable symptoms. I had eaten bread, pasta etc my whole life.

You probably don't connect your period pain with your food sensitivities like I didn't connect my period pain with gluten. Or refined seed oils. Or the sugar habit.

These are just some of the many natural ways to reduce and even eliminate your period pain completely (without going on the pill).

What's been your experience with period pain? What have you tried? Let me know in the comments.

Just remember that healing with lifestyle and nutrition changes always needs a bit of patience. 💖

This needs to be said! 👇🏼

You have the power to transform your hormone health and fix your period problems.

But it's not going to happen if you don't invest any time or effort into learning about your body and changing harmful lifestyle and food habits.

I don't blame you for not knowing - we weren't taught about our menstrual cycles in school. 😢

We weren't taught that our food choices, stressors, sleep quality, gut and liver health all impact our hormones in very real ways.

Instead, we were just put on the pill as a bandaid solution to all our period problems.

So now it's up to YOU to advocate for your health. But that's why I'm here - to help you do that.

Are you going to step into your power? 💪🏼

Do you love your menstrual cycle? Sadly it seems most people don’t — and I don’t blame them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

We were never taught about our cycles in school, or how to nurture our bodies holistically.

Learning to love your cycle isn’t just about easing pain — it’s a permission slip to be more compassionate with yourself and a pathway to a deeper connection with yourself.

When you honour the ebb and flow of your cycle, you honour yourself.

When you learn to love your cycle, you are learning to love yourself. 💖

This self-love is the foundation that’s needed before you can make sustainable change or transformation to your hormone health.

If you’re ready to start your journey of self-love and sustainable transformation.. stay tuned. 👀 Something special is coming soon. 🤩

Did you know your menstrual cycle can unlock your superpowers? 🌟

What comes to mind when you think of your menstrual cycle — pain, annoyance, inconvenience or PMS? Most people feel the same way, but it can be so much more.

Recognising that your hormones ebb and flow is a game changer. It instantly introduces the idea that it is NORMAL to feel different throughout your cycle, and abnormal to expect otherwise!

It’s an instant permission slip to be more compassionate with yourself.

Your cycle can fuel creativity and align you with your natural energy.

But what I love most is how tuning into my cycle creates a deeper connection with my body, helping me understand my health, emotions, and mental state in ways I never imagined.

Living in harmony with my cycle means living in harmony with myself.

I want the same for you. 💖

So if you’re ready to connect with your body in a deep, practical, loving way… stay tuned! Something new is coming soon. 👀

Your hormones are like divas. 💅🏻 First to react, last to recover when something’s off.

I say this with love, but it’s true! And it’s actually helpful, because it means your body has a built-in warning system. 🚨

Period pain, PMS, irregular cycles or heavy periods? These are signs your body is trying to tell you something. 📣

That’s why hormonal contraception doesn’t “fix” anything — it just turns off your hormones, like taking the batteries out of a smoke alarm instead of addressing the fire.

So, how do you fix things?

Start with the basics — nutrition, lifestyle, stress, sleep, gut, and liver health. These foundations really matter!

And if you’re not sure where to begin, why not work with a coach?

I’ve just launched a menstrual cycle survey, and as a thank you for completing it, I’m offering a complimentary 20-minute coaching session with me. Let’s get started on supporting your hormones the right way! ✨
