Withington Civic Society, Southway’s Housing and Manchester Local Care Organisation have engaged with local businesses to encourage them to pledge involvement with the Comfortable Community Scheme.

The Comfortable Community Scheme aims to enable people to travel, shop, eat and socialise in Withington Village by reducing the barriers that stop them from going out and about in their community. This scheme aims to support older residents, those with young children, pregnant people and people living with hidden disabilities.

New Girls & Young Women’s Group OMYOP
After learning, at our annual Littlefest Event in Withington, that girls and young women needed a weekly session that was just for them, we have set up a local group with practical support from Unity Arts & financial backing from (MCC/ OMYOP/ Southway Housing Beautiful South Fund). Our Youth Voice work told us that, often, girls and young women are not allowed to attend our mixed open access sessions, so we worked with our local NHS Health Development Officer to find a way to enable girls and young women to have a youth work offer.
We have lively creative sessions with the girls working on a range of arts and crafts activities, talking about the issues that affect them and planning the future programme.
Without our own dedicated space, we have been kindly helped out by Leah, a local business woman, who lets us use the upstairs room in her Ice Shack cafe and supplies us with some lovely cakes! Leah has also shown the group how to decorate their own cakes to a cafe standard, something we hope to revisit when we move into our own YIF building in the Spring….
