Should the NHS Be Funding This Care?
When someone you love needs long-term care, the conversation often starts with how the fees will be funded.
How much? How long? How quickly will savings disappear? Will we have to sell the house? How do we even begin to access support with all of this?
Only later does NHS Continuing Healthcare enter the conversation, and by that point, many families have still never even heard of it. On paper, the process can appear fairly straightforward. In reality, those embarking on it are often in for a shock.
ARROW's latest newsletter looks at why accessing CHC funding can be so challenging in practice. Drawing on recent research from the Nuffield Trust, alongside my experience supporting families through assessments, it explains why fewer people are qualifying, why outcomes vary across the country, and why the distinction between health and social care matters so much.
Most importantly, it highlights why speaking to someone knowledgeable about the system at the outset can prevent unnecessary financial loss and avoid months of uncertainty.
If you are unsure whether NHS Continuing Healthcare is something you should be exploring, this will help you sense-check where you stand.
